An experiment was conducted at BINA (Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture) farm, Mymensingh to evaluate the performance of 14 hybrid lines of boro rice (2606,92007, 92089, 93029, 94008, 94019, 94024, 94026, 95045, 95048, 95051, 96098, 96103 and 961133) with two check varieties (BRRI dhan28 and Bindhanhan 5) in boro season of 1999. The results revealed that all the growth characters, grain yield and straw yield of hybrid rice lines differed significantly with check varieties. The highest grain yield was observed in hybrid rice line 92007 (7.4 t/ha) closely followed by hybrid lines 93027, 94024 and Binadhan 5 (5.9 t/ha). Their yields were statistically identical with 2607, 92089, 95048,96089 and 94019 having yield range 6.4-6.8 t/ha . The shortest period for flowering (79 days to 151 flowering) was observed in BRRI dhan28 and it was nearer to hybrid lines 95045 and 95051. The flowering started in other hybrid rice lines ( 2606, 92007, 92089, 93027, 94008 , 94014, 94024, 94026, 95048, 96103 and 961133) ranging from 85 to 93 days that was close to Binadhan-5 (95 days). The highest grain yield in line 92007 was about 37% and 7.2% higher than the check varieties BRRI dhan28 and Binadhan-5, respectively. The higher yield was mainly contributed by its higher effective tiller and higher number of filled grains per panicle. The higher percentages of sterility (25-44%) of the hybrid rice lines were the important limitation.

To evaluate the performance of 14 hybrid lines of boro rice (2606, ,92007, 92089, 93029, 94008, 94019, 94024, 94026, 95045, 95048, 95051, 96098, 96103 and 961133) with two check varieties (BRRI dhan28 and Binadhan 5) in boro season

The experiment was conducted with 14 hybrid lines of boro rice and two check varieties at BINA farm, Mymensingh during the boro season in 1999. The land topography was medium high with sandy loam texture. The pH of the soil is 6.5 belongs to the Old Brahmaputra alluvial soil tract (Brammer et al., 1988). The experimental site is characterized by subtropical climate with high temperature, heavy rainfall, high humidity during Kharif season (April to September) and moderately low temperature in the Rabi season (October to March). The hybrid lines were of the accession 2606, 92007, 92089, 93027, 94008, 94014, 94024, 94026, 95048, 96103, 961133 and along with two check varieties BRRI Dhan28 and BINADhan 5. These were grown in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications . According to ACI limited recommendation , the fertilizezers were applied @ 270, 130 and 120 kg/ha urea , TSP and MP, respectively. At the time of final land preparation the whole amount of TSP and 1P were applied. Urea was applied in three equal splits. One split of urea was applied with other fertilizers as basal dose and the other two splits were applied at 30 DAT (days after transplanting) and 60 DAT. The experiment was conducted collaboratively with ACI Ltd . and Agronomy Division of BINA. Twenty eight day old seedlings were transplanted in plots with a spacing of 25 cmx15cm. The plantation was done on December 28, 1999. Intercultural operations, such as weeding, irrigation and pesticide applications were followed to ensure normal growth of plants. The data on first flowering, days to harvest and yield contributing characters were recorded. Statistical analyses were done using the computer software programme M-STAT and the means were compared by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
