Effect of Split Application of Nitrogen on the Growth and Yield of Summer Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out with three mungbean varieties viz. Binamoog- 2, Barimoog-2 and Binamoog-5 and four N treatments viz. control, full dose of N at sowing (T₁), full dose of N applied 1/2 at sowing + 1/2 at 15 days after sowing (DAS) (T₂), full dose of applied at 3 splits: 1/3 at sowing + 1/3 at 15 DAS + 1/3 at 30 DAS (T₃) at BINA, Mymensingh, during 10 March to 27 May 2002. Growth , yield and yield attributes of mungbean significantly increased with T₃compared to control.

Objectives:

To observe the influence of different split applications of nitrogen,
To find out the proper time of nitrogen application for optimum growth and yield of summer mungbean.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during 10 March to 27 May 2002. The soil of the experimental pots was collected from BINA farm. The experiment consisted two factors: (a) three mungbean varieties viz. Binamoog-2, Barimoog-2 and Binamoog-5 and (b) four N treatments viz. control: no nitrogen was applied (To), full dose of N at sowing (T₁), full dose of N applied 1/2 at sowing+ 1/2 at 15 days after sowing (DAS) (T₂), full dose of N applied at 3 splits: 1/3 at sowing+ 1/3 at 15 DAS + 1/3 at 30 DAS (T₃). Where the recommended full dose of N was 12 kg/ha used in this study. Triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP) were applied at the rate of 70 kg and 30 kg/ha, respectively (1 ha= 3 X 106 kg fresh soil) at the time of final pot preparation. The fertilizers were well mixed with the sun-dried soil by spading and each pot contained 6 kg of soil. The experiment was Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The plants were harvested at three times, at 40, 50 DAS and at maturity of the crop. Data on total dry matter and leaf area index at 40 and 50 DAS and chlorophyll content in leaves at 50 DAS were recorded. At maturity, plant character and yields were also recorded. The data were analyzed statistically and mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

Results showed that application of N at three splits increased all parameters of mungbean varieties over control except harvest index . Other N treatments had also positive effect on several growth and compared to control. Growth , yield and yield attributes of mungbean significantly increased with T₃ (1/3 at sowing+ 1/3 at 15 DAS + 1/3 at 30 DAS) compared to control.
