Response of Forage Crops to Nitrogen and Compost in Acid Sulphate Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on acid sulphate soil (silty clay loam, Chakarta series) belonging to "Entisols" to determine the effect of N (20 kg/ha) and compost (200 kg/ha) or in combination (10 kg/ha + 100 kg compost/ha) on the growth, biomass production and mineral contents of forage crops (Para, Napier and Guinea) at different growth stages. Results showed that combination of nitrogen and compost had a significant effect on the aforesaid criteria compared to either of them applied singly. Among the varieties, Para showed better performances which suggests that this variety could be cultivated in acid sulphate soil by fertilization With N and compost.

Objectives:

To measure the growth, biomass production and nutrient assimilation of forage crops (Para. Napier and Guinea) with added N and compost in acid sulphate soil.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted by using 0-15 cm depth surface soil of "Chakaria series" belonging to "Entisols". Air dried composite son (400 g) was placed in plastic containers that had no drain hole. The following rates of N (as urea) and compost of municipal waste were applied : T₁ = No fertilizer or compost; T₂ = Fertilizer at the rate of 20 kg N/ha without compost (0.0077 g/400 g of soil), T₃ = Compost at the rate of 200 kg/ha without fertilizer (0.0356 g/400 g of soil), T₄ = Combination of fertilizer and compost at the rate of 10 kg N/ha and 100 kg/ha: (0.0039 g + 0.0178 g/400 g of soil).

The compost had total N, P, K, S and Zn at concentrations of 0.62%, 0.36%, 1.76%, 0.17% and 90 mg/kg, respectively and available N, P. K, S and Zn at concentrations of 200, 270, 600, 140 and 18 mg/kg, respectively. P as TSP and K as muriate of potash were added at the rate of 10 kg/ha as basal doses. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. One cutting each of Para (Brachiaria mutica), Napier (Pennisetum purpurem) and Guinea (Panicum maximum) varieties were transplanted in each pot. The growth and yield data were recorded at 15. 30. 45 and 60 days after transplantation (DAT). The plant and soil samples were collected at these stages and analyzed by following the standard methods.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of this experiment revealed that N and compost in combination exerted an axiomatic effect on the growth, biomass production and mineral assimilation of Para, Napier and Guinea. Among them, para responded better than others which suggests that this variety can be cultivated in acid sulphate soil by fertilization With N and compost.
