Performance of Some Elite Mungbean Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four experiments were conducted at the sub-station farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) and farmer's field in Rangpur during 1999 to 2001 cropping seasons to evaluate the performance of six newly developed mungbean mutants viz. N₂M- 402, N₅J-521, E₁I-603, E₄I-913, and E₄I-915 through chemical mutagenesis and two check cultivars viz. Binamoog-2 and Binamoog-5. Results revealed that the mean values over three years, the mutants E₄l-915 had better performance and produced the highest seed yield ( 1.70 t/ha) than the other mutants and check varieties. This mutant however, had no significant difference of seed yield with Binamoog-5 and E4I-913. In contrast, the mutant, N₂M-402 was found poor performances under research management but performed better under farmers' management condition with the highest synchrony (96%) for maturity vis-a vis single harvest potential may save much time and energy for summer mungbean production, showed early maturity and also had highest protein content in grain. So, the mutants E₄ l-915 and N₂M-402 may be registered as improved varieties for commercial cultivation in the northern region of Bangladesh after few more trials at the farmers' field.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performances of six newly developed mutants at the northern region of Bangladesh especially in the Rangpur district.

Methodology:

Six true breeding mutants of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) were derived through selection in M5 generation. Performance of six mutants viz. N₂M-402, N₅.J-521, Ed-603, E₄I-901, E₄J-913 and E₄ 1-915 compared to the existing varieties, Binamoog-2 and Binamoog-5 were evaluated at the northern region of Bangladesh especially in Rangpur district during the Kharif-1 seasons of 1999 to 2001. All the experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with four replications. Sowing was done on February 22, February 25, March 15 and March 20 (farmer's field in 2001) for the year 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively . Unit plot size was 3m x 3m for research farm and 5m x 3m for farmer's field having 30 cm spacing between rows. Recommended cultural practices [fertilizers, weeding, irrigation, pesticide (except farmes' field) etc.] were followed to ensure normal growth of plants. Among the four experiments, the first three were conducted at the research farm of BINA, Rangpur under recommended management practices [high (optimum) input with proper cultural management practices] during 1999 to 2001 cropping seasons, while the fourth experiment was conducted at the farmer's field of Soyadpur, Rangpur under farmer's management practices (low input with farmer 's management practices) during the cropping season of 2001. Data on growth parameters of plants and protein content in grain were recorded only one year during 2000 using the methods of Radford (1967) and Yoshida et a!. (1976), respectively. Data on various plant parameters were collected from all the experiments except pod length, number of seeds/pod, 1000 grain weight and harvest index, those were collected from first three experiments following the standard techniques and were subjected to appropriate statistical analyses.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above results, it appeared that among the mutants/check varieties, the mutant line E₄ I-9 15 and the variety Binamoog-5 showed better performance under research management at Rangpur region with early maturing characteristic. But at the farmer's management practices, the mutant N₂M-402 performed better with near about 96 % synchrony in maturity, early maturity period and the highest protein content in grain among the mutants/varieties. So, mutant E₄I-915 and N₂M-402 may be release as improved varieties for commercial cultivation at the northern region of Bangladesh after few more trials at farmers' levels.
