An aromatic fine rice cultivar Ukunrnadhu was evaluated in old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soil fertilized with four levels of N (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg ha-1 ) and two levels of K (40 and 80 kg ha- 1 ) to determine its biochemical activity and yield profile. The results indicated that biochemical parameters namely, nitrate reductase activity (NRA), total chlorophyll content and soluble protein were significantly influenced by the application of N and K fertilizer. The highest NRA, total chlorophyll content, soluble protein and grain yield (2.67 t ha-1 ) were observed with 50 kg N ha-1 . These characters of the cultivar showed better performance with the 40 kg ha-1 K application . The results suggested that 50 kg N and 40 kg K ha-1 could be recommended for better biochemical parameters and good yield for the aromatic fine rice cultivar Ukunmadhu.

To find out the optimum rates of N and K fertilizer for efficient utilization of those elements by rice plants for better biochemical performance as well as maximum yield .

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the aman season (July to December), 2002. Soil of the experimental site belonged to the Sonatola series of Old Brahmaputtra Floodplain (AEZ-9). The indigenous aromatic fine rice cultivar Ukunmadhu was used for the study. Four doses (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg ha- 1 ) of N in the form of urea and two doses (40 and 80 kg ha-1) of K In the form of muriate of potash were applied in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a factorial RCBD with 4 replications having a unit plot size of 4.0m x 2.5m. The plots were fertilized with TSP (8 kg P ha- 1 ) and gypsum (3 kg S ha- 1 ). The whole amount of TSP, MP, and gypsum were applied at the final land preparation while urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 10, 30 and 50 days after transplanting (DAT). Thirty day-old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 5th September, 2002, with 4 seedlings per hill spaced at 20 cm x 15 cm. Sampling was started from tillering and continued up to harvest at different stages (tillering, panicle initiation, booting and flowering stage). Nitrate reductase activity (NAR) was determined from the leaf samples following the method of Stewart and Orebamjo (1979). The third leaf from the top of plants was collected between 09.30 and 11.00 am. Leaf samples were chopped and 0.05g was taken for analysis. Finally reading was taken at 540 nm wavelength in a spectrophotometer and NRA was expressed as µ mol NO-2 g- 1 fw h- 1 . Chlorophyll content was determined at tillering and flowering stages using the method of Coombs et al. (1985). Leaf samples of 0.05 g were taken in small bottles covered by aluminum foil with 10 ml 80% acetone. The samples were incubated in dark for 7-10 days. The color of the extract solution was measured at 663 nm and 645 nm and total chlorophyll content was expressed as mg g-1 fw. Soluble protein was determined only at the flowering stage from the leaf samples according to the method of Lowry et al. (1951) and the result was expressed as g 100 g- 1 fw. The data were statistically analyzed and the mean comparison was achieved by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

From the results it may be said that application of fertilizer N increased biochemical attributes viz. NRA, total chlorophyll content, soluble protein and grain yield. Application of 50 kg N ha-1 showed the optimum performance of the said parameters; further increment of N declined the activity. Forty kg K ha-1 also showed the better biochemical performance and higher yield. Thus, application of 50 kg and 40 kg K ha-1 would be optimum doses for maximum biochemical activities and grain yield of aromatic rice Ukunmadhu in the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soil (AEZ-9). But it need/needs more field trials to confirm the results
