Ethnic Fruit Diversity of Khagrachari District, Bangladesh and Their Traditional Uses

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ethnic fruits are valuable and have been used for the production of various drugs in addition to their traditional uses as fruits. The fruits plants are traditionally used to cure various diseases. The use of local medicinal knowledge as herbal remedy is a part of traditional heritage in any rural areas of Bangladesh, especially among ethnic group peoples in forest inhabitation. The present research work was based on a survey conducted in eight upazila of Khagrachari District in Bangladesh during the different seasons in 2011-2014 to explore the ethnic fruit plants and fruit diversity. The local, especially, old people use medicinal plants for various ailments and various purposes. In the present paper a total of 70 fruit plant species in 53 genera under 33 families have been recorded. Of these, 6 species in 5 genera belong to 4 monocot families and 64 species in 48 genera belonging to 29 dicot families. These species exhibited in diverse life forms in the area, viz., 2 species are herbs, 13 species shrubs, 5 species climbers, 1 species creeper, 4 species palm and 45 trees. Though the tribal people grow some fruit plants in their homesteads, but most of the ethnic fruit plants have been growing in natural habitats in wild conditions. A checklist of the ethnic fruit species is presented with scientific name, Bengali/ Local names, habitat, habit, occurrence of species and ethnobotanical uses.

Objectives:

1. The present research project has been aimed for an extensive and in-depth research on the survey, identification and documentation of ethnic fruits which naturally grow in different areas of Khagrachari district in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

An ethnobotanical survey was conducted during the different seasons in February 2011 to October, 2014. The study was carried out in eight upzilla of Khagrachari district. They were Dighinala, Khagrachari, Lakshmichari, Mahalchari, Manikchari, Matiranga, Panchhari, Ramgarh upzila. Ethnobotanical information was collected by using standard techniques such as - interview with local people, direct observation in field and market and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with different ethnic community , traders and clients. The documented information was verified by cross-questioning the people at different places.
