A Note on the Flowering of Bambusa Balcooa Roxb.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The flowering nature of Bambusa balcooa Roxb. has been described. It was observed that it flowers gregariously in the clump but sporadically over the area.The clump died after flowering without setting any seed. The flowering cycle has been speculated to be 40±5 years.

Objectives:

a) To study the inflorescence and floral morphology of Bambusa balcooa.

b) To find out the flowering nature and flowering cycle of Bambusa balcooa.

Methodology:

To study the biology and taxonomy of different Bangladeshi bamboos, different areas of Bangladesh have been surveyed and a constant watch has been kept on the flowering of bamboos to collect the materials. During the survey, the flowers of balcooa were collected from Baldi of Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh district in September, 1983 and July 1984 and also from Hazirhat in Saidpur upazila in Rangpur district in May, 1985. The flowering materials were preserved in the herbarium of the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute.The materials were identified and floral morphology were studied

Achievement/Findings:

Bambusa balcooa clump is complete-flowering in nature,i.e., all the branches of a clump start flowering almost simultaneously. But the species flower sporadically over the area. Speculated flowering cycle would be 40±5 years or a multiple of it. The species does not set any seed like Bambusa vulgaris, another village bamboo of Bangladesh Phyllostachys bambusoides and p. nigra f henonis have fertility and in Japan most of them are sterile. It is also important to note that there is no published record of systematic senescence in sterile plants of these species. Part flowering of clumps and hidden rhizome buds are biologically advantageous to continue the race of such bamboo species. Causes of non-seed setting also need investigations. As Bambusa balcooa does not set any fruit and dies after flowering , its synchronous flowering over the area might threaten its existence. So in vitro conservation of the species is desired.
