Response of Mungbean, Vigna Radiata (l.) Wilczek to Rhizobium Inoculation and Phosphorus Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on mungbean under different level of phosphorus and Rhizobium inoculation during kharif, 1995 revealed that phosphorus application with Rhizobium inoculation had significant effect on nodulation, dry matter content as well as yield and yield attributes. Nodulation was more pronounced at the flowering stage. Nodule dry weight showed similar trend under variable phosphorus levels with inoculated or uninoculated plants at all growth stages. Grain contributed maximum dry weight (26.01 g/plant) at harvest. Inoculation along with P application did not affect the harvest index. Phosphorus application up to 75 kg P₂0₅/ha with Rhizobium inoculation progressively and Significantly increased the observed parameters. High dose of phosphorus decreased yield and other parameters studied.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of Rhizobium inoculation and phosphorus levels on nodulation, dry matter production and mungbean yield.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the Instiute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur during khartf season, 1995. using mungbean line NM92 as a test crop on a sandy loam soil. The soil had pH 6.8, organic carbon 0.35%, total N 0.03%, total and available P were 0.009% and 11.0 ppm and available Ca, Mg, Na and K were 4.12, 3.31. 3.02 and 1.12 (meq/1 00 g dry soil), respectively. Two inoculation levels were assigned as one factor and five phosphorus levels (0, 25. 50, 75 and 100 kg P₂0₅/ha) were assigned as another factor. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design with four replications. Phosphours as triple superphosphate was applied 5 em below seed level. Nitrogen and potassium were applied at the rates of 30 kg N/ha (in the form of urea) and 60 kg K₂0/ha (in the form of muriate of potash), respectively, to the upper half of the pot soil 3 days before sowing. Fifty percent (50%) of mungbean seeds were inoculated with Rhizobium strain TAL 303. Seeds were then air dried in the laboratory and five seeds were sown in earthen pots each containing 14 kg of soils on the same evening. One healthy plant per pot was retained after the formation of first trifoliate leaf. All the interculture operations were performed as and when necessary. The crop was sprayed five times with Ripcord 100 EC at the rate of 0.01 ml/l water to protect plants from insect attack. To determine nodulation, plant samplings were done at pre-flowering, flowering, pod-filling and harvesting stages, respectively. Plants were carefully uprooted. Roots were washed to study nodule numbers and their dry weight. The crop was harvested at its full maturity. Data on seed yield and yield attributes, dry matter production at harvest and harvest index were recorded. Harvest index was calculated dividing weight of seeds by total above- ground dry matter content. Data were subjected to statistical analysis and means compared using LSD test at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study indicated that Rhizobium inoculation showed better performance at different levels of phosphatic fertilizer and did best at 75 kg P₂0₅/ha.
