Non Conventional Fishery By-products of Fish Markets in Dhaka Metropolis, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The non?conventional fishery by?products in the fish markets of Dhaka metropolis were identified and quantified by structured survey while the marketing channels were examined through observation. Nearly 22049 mt by? products were estimated in these markets in which only 15 per cent was found to be used commercially. While cutters were found to collect most dry scales, maws were drawn by the cutter?cum?sellers. Estimated total yield of dry scales found was 390 mt which could be increased by 9?folds. The expected potential harvest of maws could be increased by 2?folds while PG by 28?folds of the present. Total value of the current harvest of dry scales, maws and PG found was US$604,615 which would be increased by 3.5?folds if the entire yield can be harvested. This study has clearly shown the potential economic importance of the non? conventional fishery by?products of Dhaka City that may improve the livelihoods of the poor cutters and cutter?sellers.

Methodology:

The quantitative data were collected by structured survey while qualitative information was explored by case studies and observations as the primary tools. The survey was conducted in the fish markets, traders’ houses and in the feed manufacturing factories of Dhaka metropolis. Purposive random sampling technique was applied in collecting the data. The total number of fish markets in Dhaka metropolis is 395 which have been classified according to the Dhaka Mahanagar Machh O Kancha Bazar Kshudra Baybasayi Samiti (Dhaka Metropolitan Fish and Vegetable Market Small Traders Association). Of the total markets where fish are cut in Dhaka metropolis, 10 per cent were covered in this survey. Thus the sample size was 40. Sampled 40 fish markets were classified into three categories based on the number of fish retailers. The market size classified depending on the number of the fish retailers indicates the yield of by?products and their types. Surveyed 86 individuals were classified into two groups as cutter and seller depending upon whether they cut and/or sell fish. The cutters and the cutter?cum?sellers were different in economic status and the collecting potential. The fish by?products were assessed for a period of one year. Values of the by?products were estimated in local currency Bangladeshi taka (BDT) and was converted into US dollar (US$). The questions were post?coded when needed, entered on the computer using Microsoft Excel, checked after entry and analysed using statistical software SPSS version 10.0. Descriptive statistics was used in analysing and presenting the data.

Achievement/Findings:

Current yield of dry scales is 390 mt, maw (dry) 36.7 mt and PG 57600 pcs as observed in this study in the fish markets of the Dhaka metropolitan. However, the potential yield would be 3390 mt of dry scales, 76.8 mt of maw (dry) and 1627200 pcs of PG which is 869, 209 and nearly 3000 per cent increase of the present if all people involved in this sector harvest these non? conventional fishery by?products. Thus the total yield would be many folds than the present’s in all markets across the country. Based on the current market prices of those products, the estimated value is US$0.6 million that could be rose to US$2.09 million a year which is 346 per cent increase of the present value only from Dhaka metropolitan city. However, the exporters have been purchasing those items across the country. Therefore, the prospect of improving the livelihoods through increased harvest and income by selling the fishery by?products is vivid.
