Effects of Soil Moisture on Growth, Yield and Blochemlcal Attributes of Lentil Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) , Mymensingh to assess the effects of three soil moisture level s of 80, 60 and 40% field capacity (FC) on four lentil genotypes viz.,, BARI Masur-4, E₅ M-I018, LM-30-3 and LM- 30-5. Plant height , number of branches, number of leaves , root , leaf, stem weight, Iota] dry matter per plant, total chlorophyll, total sugar, reducing sugar in leaves, number of pods per plant.. 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant were the highest at 60%FC followed by 80% FC and 40% FC. BARI Masur-4 showed the best performance among the genotypes.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of different soil moisture levels on some genotypes of lentil
To identify the genotype tolerant to water stress conditions .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in plastic pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during November 2004 to February 2005 .The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 6.8. The collected soil was dried in the sun. A total of 72 pots (3 moisture levels x 4 genotypes x 3 replications >: 2 harvests) were prepared with 8 kg soils in each pot and were placed under polyethylene sheet . Urea, TSP and MP were applied as N-P 2 05 -K 2 0 @!. 30-90-40 kg ha ^{- 1} respectively. Urea was applied in three equal splits. One third of the urea, entire quantity of TSP and MP were added on the day of final pot preparation. Second dose of urea was applied as top dressing at 30 days after sowing (DAS) and third dose at 45 DAS. Seeds of four genotypes of lentil namely, BARI Masur- 4, E5M-1018, LM-30-3 and LM-30-5 were sown on 21 October 2004. Five to seven seeds were sown per pot at 10 cm spacing. The soil of the pots were kept well moist by applying water up to 50% field capacity to ensure proper germination. After germination three healthy seedlings per pot were retained for the experiment. The experiment consisted of four genotypes and three soil moisture levels. The soil moisture levels were T ₁ -80% FC , T₂-- 60% FC , T ₃ and 40% FC. The experiment was laid out in randomized zed complete block design (RCBD), where each treatment was replicated 3 times. Field capacity of the soils used in the experiment was measured following gravimetric method. These measured amount of water was multiplied by 0.80, 0.60 and 0.40 to determine the amount of water to maintain 80%, 60% and 40% FC, respectively. These stress treatments were applied at 20 DAS and continued up to maturity . Data on morphophysiological and biochemical attributes were recorded at 60 DAS and yield and yield attributes at maturity. Then those were analyzed statistically with the help of MSTAT computer packages. Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) compared the means at 5% level of significance.
