Evaluation of Water Quality and Plankton Abundance in a Canal Receiving Sugar Mill Effluent in Rajshahi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The physico-chemical and biological conditions of a large canal receiving effluent from the Harian Sugar Mills at Rajshahi have been studied during the sugar production period from February 1994 to April 1994. Sampling was performed weekly. Higher water temperature, TSS, TDS, chloride, hardness, conductivity and BOD values with anoxic condition indicate a highly polluted condition of water. The phyto and zooplankton members were found to be pollution tolerant and traced during the entire period of study with varying abundance.

Objectives:

To estimate the physico- chemical and biological conditions of water of a canal receiving the entire effluent from the Harian Sugar Mill at Rajshahi.

Methodology:

The sampling spot is a 5 km long and 5 m. wide perennial canal receiving the effluents from the sugar mills at Harian in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Weekly sampling was carried out from the month of February to April, 1994, when the mill was in production period. The first sampling spot was at a place 50 metres from the mill site while other two spots were located 50 metres apart from each other. Water samples were collected from a depth of 10-25 cm below the surface using a 250 ml. glass stoppered bottle. Air and water temperature was noted by a thermometer. The water colour was detected visually while the odour was noted by smelling.Transparency was determined by a secchi disc. A digital pH meter was used for the measurement of pH of water while conductivity was noted by using a portable conductivity meter. DO content of water was estimated by Winkler's method, C0₃ and HC0₃ alkalinities and free CO₂ were determined by titrimetric methods. Hardness of water, Chlortde content, NH₄- N and mobile NH3, BOD, TSS and TDS were estimated by following APHA . Plankton were collected by using a plankton net of No. 20 silk bolting cloth. Identification of plankton members was done immediately after collection. Plankton abundance was estimated by using a counting chamber.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study reveals an acidic condition of water with permanent anoxia, low HCO₃ values and high NH₃ content indicating a state of highly polluted condition of the canal water. A comparison of the richer variety of plankton community in unpolluted habitats and that in the present study site, indicates that the sugar mills wastes have severely affected the plankton community during the production period of the sugar factory.
