Effect of Phosphorus on Dry Matter Production, Puptake and Its Critical Limit for Mungbean in Different Soils of Bangladesh Using 32p as Tracer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot culture experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture green house with 15 top soils from different Agro Ecological Zones of Bangladesh during rabi season to find out the effect of different level of Phosphorous application on the yield and uptake of Phosphorus and its crtical level using 32p labelled superphosphate as tracer. The ability of different extractants to extract P followed the order: Truog> Nelson> Olsen> Hunter> Bray. Considering the average of 15 soils, the maximum amount of P (36.4 ppm) was extracted by Truog method and the minimum (17.8 ppm) by Bray method. Results indicated that phosphorus application increased dry matter production and P uptake of mungbean compared with no P treatments in all soils under study. There are wide variation among the soil types on parameters such as percent P derived from fertilizer (2.00-21.50). percent fertilizer P utilization by plant (1.30- 5.00). P uptake (1.92-10.44 mg/pot) and labile P (0.15-1.96 g/pot). Critical level of extractable P for mungbean by Bray method was found. to be 13.0 ppm indicating that below this level of soil test value. an economic crop response in highly expected. Such limit for Hunter. Olsen. Truog and Nelson methods appeared to be 15.5. 17.0. 25.0 and 27.0 ppm. respectively.

Objectives:

To know the effect of phosphatic fertilizer on dry matter production. efficiency of P utilization. P uptake by mungbean and its critical limit with respect to different extractant and soils.

Methodology:

A pot culture experiment was conducted in the green house to determine the critical level of soil P for mungbean using five standard P extraction methods. Soils were collected from 15 locations of 3 general soil types comprising Brahmaputra floodplain soils, Red brown terrace soils and Ganges floodplain soils. Fifteen soils representing 15 soil series of Bangladesh were used in this study. The characterization and physico-chmical properties of soils under study were also given. Each soil received three treatments viz. (i) all nutrients (NKSZn) minus P (ii) all nutrients (NKSZn) puls 40 kg P/ha and (iii) all nutrients (NKSZn) puls 80 kg P/ha. The source of P was 32P labelled super phosphate. One kg air dried soil was placed in a plastic pot and a basal dose of 15, 40, 40 and 5 (N, K, S and Zn) kg/ha from (NH₄)SO₄, KCl, (NH₄)SO₄ and ZnCl₂, respectively was made to support the normal plant growth, Each treatment was replicated thrice in a complete randomized block design. Fifteen mungbean seeds (BINAMUNG-2) were sown in each pot. They were thinned to 12 plant/pot and were allowed to grow for 6 weeks. Plants were cut at ground level and dried in an oven at 65⁰C for 24 hours. Dry matter yield (oven dry basis) was recorded. The dried plant samples were ground by a grinding mill and then digested with H₂S0₄ and HCIO₄ mixture (1:1). Phosphorus in the digest was determined by Vanado-molybdophosphate yellow colour method
