Effect of Containers on the Viability of Groundnut Seed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four different containers viz . earthen pitcher, tin, xan with lid, gunny bag and sealed polythene bag were tested to select suitable containers for the storage of groundnut seeds under normal condition of Bangladesh. All the studied containers were found to be suitable for the storage of groundnut seeds from kharif to kharif whereas sealed polythene bag and tin with Iid were suitable only for rabi to rabi season. Rabi groundnut seeds can be used as seed in the next rabi if they are stored either in seared polythene bag or in tin with lid.

Objectives:

To find out suitable containers for the storage of Groundnut seed.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong with one variety of Groundnut seed, Dhaka. Groundnut seeds of Rabi and Kharif crops harvested on 20. 4.80 and 18.8 80 respectively were properly sun-dried before use in the experiment. The initial moisture content and the germination percentage of seeds of both the seasons were recorded, Four different types of containers eg. Earthen Pitcher, Tin, Gunny bag and Polythene bag were used for storing the seeds. Two kilogrammes of seeds were placed in each container. The experiment was replicated three times. The tin and the earth en pitcher were coverd with lid. The gunny bags were tied up and the polythene bags were sealed properly. All the sealed containers were kept on wooden tray in normal room temperature in the laboratory. Germination tests of seeds of different containers were performed regularly at an interval of 10 days. The seeds of Rabi and Kharif Groundnut were stored on tee 29th April. 1980 and 25th August, 1980 respectively. The observations were continued upto December, 1980 for Rabi crop seed and upto April, 1981 for Kharif crop seed.

Achievement/Findings:
