An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University farm. Mymensingh in boro season of 1998 to study the simultaneous growth of Azolla with BRRI Dhan29 for using as a biofertilizer and to compare the effects of Azolla and urea on the yield of rice. Two layers of Azolla grown with BRRI Dhan29 (7-45 DAT) produced 19.7 to 22.3 t ha-1 biomass containing 42.8 to 48.5 kg N ha-1 and one layer qf Azolla produced 12.9 to 15.6 t ha-1 biomass containing 28.2 to 34.0 kg N ha-1 (7-27 DAT). Incorporation of two layers of Azolla (grown from 0.2 kg m-2 inoculum) plus application of 50 kg N ha-1 produced the highest grain yield. of 4.48 t ha-1, compared to 4.22 t ha-1 yield obtained due to application of 100 kg N hat as urea and 4.19 t ha-1 produced by incorporation of one layer of Azolla and 50 kg N ha-1 as urea, but the yield differences were not statistically significant. The highest nutrient uptake (grain+straw) of 85.8 kg N ha-1, 17.9 kg P ha-1 and 9.8 kg S ha-1 were recorded for incorporation of two layers of Azolla iqrounc from 0.2kg m-2 inoculum) plus application of 50 kg N ha-1 , compared to 70.4 kg N na-1, 14.1 kg P ha-1 and 6.8 kg S ha-1, respectively, obtained due to the application of 100 kg N ha-1 as urea. Such values were lower in case of incorporation of one layer of Azolla and 50 kg N ha-1 as urea, but the mean comparisons were not statistically significant. Thus, incorporation of two layers of Azolla plus 50 kg N ha-1 as urea might be a good practice in reducing the use of costly urea.

To study the growth of Azolla with BRRl Ohan29 that can be used as biofertilizer and to compare the effects of nitrogen fertilizer and Azolla on the yield and nutrient contents of BRRl Ohan29.

The field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University farm. Mymensingh during boro season of 1998 with BRRl Dhan29 as a test crop. The soil was silt loam in texture having pH 6.6. organic matter 1.73%. total N 0.107%. available P 9.0 ppm and available S 12.0 ppm. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 2.5m. There were five treatments such as To : No Azolla or N. TI : AZ (0. 1 kg m-2) 2L (27 and 45 DAT) plus N50 (in two equal splits at 15 and 60 DAT). T2 : AZ (0.1 kg m-2) l L (27 DAT) plus Nso (15.45 and 60 DAT), T3 : Az(0.2 kg m-2) 2L (27 and 45 DAT) plus N50 (15 and 60 DAT), T4 : AZ (0.2 kg m-2) lL (27 DAT) plus N5o (15,45 and 60 DAT) and T5 : No Azolla + 100 kg N ha-1 (15. 45 and 60 DAT). [AZ = Azolla, 2L = 2 layers of Azolla, 1L = 1 layer of Azolla, DAT = Days after transplanting and N50 = 50 kg N ha-1]. Urea was used as a source of N. In case of treatments T1 and T3. the first inoculation was done at 7 DAT and the layer formed was incorporated at 27 DAT. The second inoculation was done at 28 DAT and. the layer formed was subsequently incorporated at 45 DAT. In case of T2 and T4 treatments. the inoculation was done at 7 DAT and the layer formed was incorporated at 27 DAT. In all treatments. a recommended dose of P was used in two equal splits at 15 and 35 DAT for normal growth of Azolla. Furadan 3G was used at the rate of 2.5 kg ai. ha-1 for preventing Azolla from the insect attacks. MP. gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied to all the plots as basal @ 40 kg K. 10 kg S and 1 kg Zn ha+, respectively. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested at maturity. Soil samples from 0-15 cm depth were collected before land preparation and after harvest of the crop. Organic matter and N contents in soil were determined. The grain and straw samples from each plot were dried in an oven at 60ºC for about 48 hours and then ground. The samples were digested arid then analysed for determination of N. P and S contents. Data were analysed fol- lowing analysis of variance technique (ANOVA) and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

The data clearly indicate that incorporation of additional amount of Azolla biomass (in two layers 19.8 to 22.3 t ha-1 containing 42.8 to 48.5 kg N ha-1 and in one layer 12.9 to 15.6 t ha-1 obtain- ing 28.2 to 34.0 kg N ha-1) significantly increased total N. P and S uptake by BRRI Dhan29 over the recommended dose of fertilizers in a situation where a recommended amount of P and S application was common to all treatments. Azolla biomass acted as the additional source of both P and S in addition to supplying N. 10.3. 2.0 and 0.55 kg ha-1 more N. P and S uptake. respectively due to two incorporations of Azolla along with 40 kg N ha-1 compared to using 100 kg N ha-1 as urea.
