Tiller Dynamics in Sugarcane Variety Isd-16

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the tiller dyna.nlcs in sugarcane variety Isd-16 under different planting/transplanting techniques such as planting of three-budded setts, paired spaced planting of two-budded setts, planting of 'plant settlings and spaced transplanting of soil bed and polybag settlings. Monthly counts on tiller production showed maximum tiller population in May irrespective of planting/transplanting techniques which gradually declined due to mortality of tillers thereafter. Higher tiller was obtained from transplanted settlings compared to direct planted two/three-budded setts. Tillers produced by May, 65-78% of them died till harvest in December, and only 22-35% tillers become millable canes. The present findings sought for research attention towards manipulation of soil and nutrition levels as well as improved management practices on tillers for maximizing mill able canes to contribute in sugarcane yield.

Objectives:

To study the tiller production, tiller mortality, and development of tiller into millable canes under different planting/transplanting techniques in sugarcane variety Isd -16.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Sugarcane Research and Training Institute (SRTI) farm with the variety Isd-16. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Row to row distance was maintained one meter, and inter-plant spacing 60 cm at 8mx9m plot. Five different sources of planting materials were used such as plant settlings, two-budded setts, three-budded setts, soil bed settlings and polybag settlings. Plant settling refers to the settlings raised through detopping of standing sugarcane in the field. Variable plant densities were maintained usmq vanaole number of buds/settlings per hill. One irrigation was applied after planting/transplanting to ensure germination of setts, and establishments of settlings. NPK fertilizers at the rate of 152:54:92 kg/ha were applied according to normal practice. Necessary intercultural operations like weeding, mulching, supplimentary irrigation, pests and diseases control etc were done. The experiment comprised of the following nine treatment combinations:

T₁= Planting of three-buddea Sew; (end to end placement).

T₂= Paired spaced planting of two-budded setts (PSP.)

T₃= Planting of single Plant settling per hill (PS-One).

T₄ = Planting of two Plant settlings per hill (PS-Two).

T₅ = Planting of three Plant settlings per hill (PS-Three).

T₆ =' Transplanting of one two-budded soil bed .settlings per hill (SBS-Single).

T₇ = Transplanting of two two-budded soil bed settlings per hill (SBS-Two).

T₈ = Transplanting of one polybag settling per hill (PBS-single).

T₉ = Transplanting of two polybag settlings per hill (PBS-two). Data on tiller production and mortality were recorded in every months in each treatment. Mortality of tiller was determined according to Miah and Sarkar (1982). Final millable canes were recorded at harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicate some possibilities of increasing millable canes production through increasing planting/transplanting density per hill. However, the information regarding the inter-plant spacing with higher planting density per hill is till lacking, Therefore, present finding sought for directing research attention towards manipulation of soil and nutrition level as well as improvement in tiller management practices for maximizing millable canes to contribute in ultimate sugarcane yield.
