Effect of Foliar Fungicides on Lentil Rust

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of four foliar fungicides Tilt 250EC (2ml -1 ), Bavistin SOWP (2g r-1 Ridomil MZ-72 (2g -1 ) and Dithane M-45 (2g -1 ) on the incidence and severity of rust ( Uromyces fabae) of two lentil I (Lens culinuris) varieties Binamasur-1 and Barimasur-1 were determined through field experiment conducted in 2003-04 cropping season . The fungicides were applied twice. at I5 day intervals from the appearance of rust pustules on the lower leaves of lentil. All the tested fungicides reduced the incidence and severities of the disease and increased seed yield. The performance of Barimasur-1 showed better than Bmamasur-1 in reducing the disease severity and increasing seed yield. Among the fungicides , the perfomance of Tilt 250EC (Propicona zol) was the best for reducing the severity of the disease and increasing seed yield (89.7%>) followed by Bavistin SOWP (Carbendazim) (49.2%) over control.

Objectives:

To identify suitable fungicide(s) for the management of lentil rust in order to increase seed yield and quality of lentil in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out to evaluate four foliar fungicides a rust of two lentil varities, Binamasur-1 and Barimasur-1 at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture sub-station farm, Ishurdi during the winter season of 2003-04. The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with three replications. The lentil varieties were tested on main plots and the fungicides were tested in sub-plots . The unit plot size was 3.0 m x 2.1 m. The seeds of lentil varieties were sown in rows of 30 cm apart on 02 November 2003. The recommended doses of fertilizers (Anonymous, 1999) were applied and normal cultural practices were followed . The fungicides Tilt 250EC (Propiconazole) (2ml r-1), Bavistin 50WP (Carbendazim) (2g 1-1 ), Ridomil MZ-72 (Mancozeb+Metalaxyl) (2g 1-1 ) and Dithane M-45 (Manco zeb) (2g 1-1 ) were sprayed twice at 15-day intervals commencing from the appearance of pustules on lower leaves of growing plants. The control plants were sprayed with water only. The incidence and severities of rust were recorded at maximum pod ripening stage of crop growth. The disease severity was recorded on the basis of a 1-9 scoring scale (Singh and Sandhu, 1988). Disease assessment of ten randomly selected plants was done from the central rows of each plot. The crop harvested at physiological maturity and yield data were recorded. Per cent d ' index (POI) was calculated according to Singh (1988). Finally data were anal statistically using computer software MSTAT.
