Experiments were conducted in the laboratory to study the influence of five different host plants on some aspects of the biology of cucurbit fruit  fly , Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coq.).The host vegetables were squash (Cucurhita pepo), bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), sweet gourd (Cucurbita moschata), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) and snake gourd (Trichosanthes anguina). Biology of the flies were studied on the basis of incubation period of the egg, larval and pupal period , larval and pupal size, and longevity of adults. It was observed from the results that the squash was the most suitable host in which the flies developed very fast having the lowest incubation period of the egg (24.0±0 .0 hors) and the larval period (6.67±0.58 days) respectively. Larval and pupal siz.e was also largest on squash . The flies reared on squash had the highest longevity and also laid the highest number (238.5) of eggs . The bitter gourd was found to be least preferred host. Total life span of the flies was highest on sweet gourd . Based on the biological attributes, the suitability of five host species for cucurbit fruit fly might be ranked as squash>sweet gourd >bottle gourd >snake gourd >bitter gourd.

To study the influence of five different host plants on some aspects of the biology of cucurbit fruit fly , Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coq.)

Experiments on the biology and host preference of Bactrocera cucurbllae on some vegetables and effect of gamma radiation on their sterility were conducted in the laboratory of the Entomology Division, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from September, 2001 to June, 2002. The Biology of the cucurbit fruit fly was studied on five Cucurbitae vegetables, such as squash (Cucurbita pepo), bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), sweet gourd (Cucurhita moschata), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) and snake gourd (Trichosanthes anguina). All food vegetables '.ere collected from the local market in and around the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh. To keep a constant supply of wild type flies, infested bottle gourd were collected from the local market and kept in plastic container for collection of larvae . The mature larvae came out of the infested gourd and then they were kept in saw dust for pupation. Then the pupae were placed in a wooden framed cage covered with nylon net for adult emergence. The adult flies were supplied with a laboratory prepared artificial diet and water in soaked cotton. Rearing was  continued up to five generation on bottle gourd and they were used for experiment. The adult Insects were reared on artificial diet and the composition of the  diet was (i) Sugar, (ii) Yeast hydrolysate, and (iii) Protein . The artificial diet was prepared by mixing of yeast and sugar with 1:3 ratio. Five hundred flies were kept in 5 cages having one hundred flies  in  each cage. Then 5 host vegetables viz. squash, bottle  gourd,  sweet  gourd,  bitter  gourd and snake gourd were placed in 5 cages as egg laying media for the flies. The flies were allowed to lay egg on the vegetable for 24 hours and then the vegetables containing the eggs were taken out. The vegetables were kept separately in plastic container. Data on different aspects of the biology of cucurbii fly viz number of eggs laid, incubation period of eggs,  larvae  and  pupal  period,  larvae  and  pupal size, longevity of adults were collected. There were five replications for each treatment. Collected data were statistically analyzed.
