Taxonomic Variation and Growth Performance Between Local Pangas (pangasius Pangasius) and Thai Pangas(pangasianodon Hypophthalmus) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to investigate the variation between local pangas (Pangasius pangasius) and Thai pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) by morphological observation and growth performance comparison. Sixteen morphometric and eight meristic characteristics were compared between local and Thai pangas for taxonomic analysis. The six morphometric proportionate (TL:HL, TL:HBD, TL:LBD, SL:HL, HL:EL and HBD:LBD) were significantly different (p<0.05). Among the eight meristic characteristics five viz. number of branchiostegal rays, pectoral fin rays (soft), ventral fin rays, anal fin rays and caudal fin rays of local pangas were significantly different (p<0.05) from Thai pangas. There were notable differences in external morphological features between local and Thai pangas. In ninty days growth study between the two species, Thai pangas showed significantly higher (p<0.05) growth rate than local pangas . The length gain (%), weight gain (%), specific growth rate (%) and survival rate (%) were observed 45.25±13.05, 1 65.63±48.19, 0.47±0.09, and 89.55±2. 15, respectively for local pangas whereas 54.50±3.67, 202.40±24.40, 0.53±0.04, and 93.14±1.13, respectively were for Thai pangas (p<0.05). The water quality parameters in local and Thai pangas ponds during the experimental period were found to be similar and within acceptable range for their rearing . The results suggest that a remarkable taxonomic variation is existed between the local pangas (P. pangasius) and Thai pangas (P. hypophthalmus) and the growth rate of Thai pangas was always higher than the local pangas.

Objectives:

To investigate the taxonomic variation and growth performance between local pangas (P. pangasius) and Thai pangas (P. hypophthalmus).

Methodology:

Fingerlings of the local pan gas were collected from Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Riverine Station, Chandpur and Thai pangas were collected from Al Amin hatchery , Mymensingh on 16th July 2011. The fingerlings were reared in the 'Field Laboratory Complex', Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh . Three ponds were used for each source to observe the growth performance of two species. A commercial fish feed (Mega feed) was supplied two times in a day. Sampling was done on every fifteen days interval at morning. The length and weight were recorded by random sampling of 20 fingerlings from each pond by using a measuring scale and digital balance . After the collection of samples from both sources, 30 individuals were used for taxonomic study. After the measurement of morphometric characteristics the samples of both pangas were boiled in hot water to remove the muscle from the body. This was done for easy counting of meristic characteristics and to allow for examination of occipital shape. Number of vertebrae; branchiostegal rays; dorsal fin rays; anal fin rays; pectoral fin rays; pelvic fin rays; and caudal fin rays. A magnifying glass was used to count the fin rays and only the principal rays were counted separately. Non-parametric statistical analyses were performed in all the comparisons. For the statistical analysis of data, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukeys test was done using the SPSS (Statistical package for social science, version-12.Q) at 5% level of significance. The proportion data were transformed to normalize before statistical analysis (ANOVA).

Achievement/Findings:

The water quality parameters in local and Thai pangas ponds during the experimental period were found to be similar and within acceptable range for their rearing . The results suggest that a remarkable taxonomic variation is existed between the local pangas (P. pangasius) and Thai pangas (P. hypophthalmus) and the growth rate of Thai pangas was always higher than the local pangas.
