The experiment was conducted to assess the moisture content, germination, vigour, co efficient of germination and their relationship of jute seeds collected from five different sources. Quality of jute seed was better in BJRI seeds followed by BADC than that of other three seed sources. Higher initial moisture content subsequently reduced germination and vigour of farmers and market seeds. Corchorus capsulris L. seeds were bigger in size and had the higher seed weight than that of C. olitorius L. seeds. Moisture percent was higher in farmers and market seeds and lower in BJRI and BADC seed's. Germination percentages of both jute species have positive relationship with seed vigour. Seed vigour of both jute species have positive relationship with co-efficient of germination.

To evaluate different seed quality indicators of jute as influenced by seed sources.

The experiment was conducted at the Crop management laboratory, Agronomy division of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka during the year 2004. Four different jute seed producing and distributing source were selected to collected study materials for all the experiments. The sources were: i Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, ii. Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, iii. farmers of two locations for each jute species and iv. local market. The third source of farmers was divided into two sub-sources. The sub sources of Corchorus capsularis L. were Manikgonj and Kishoregonj, and for Corchorus olitorius L. Faridpur and Rangpur locations, respectively. Primary seed sample of 250 gm each was collected from 10 farmers randomly. All the primary seed samples were mixed thoroughly to make a composite sample of each location. From the composite samples 500g seeds were taken and was regarded as submitted sample. The submitted seed samples were kept in brown paper bags. All the seed samples collected from the different seed sources were labeled properly and preserved in Gene Bank of BJRI at 20°C. Working seed samples were taken from the preserved seed samples as per requirement. Both the species of jute namely C. capsularis L. and C. olitorius L. were considered as study material. Separate experiments were conducted for each of the species. The seed collected from BJRI and BADC were 0-9897 of C. olitorius L. and CVL-l of C. capsularis L. However, seeds collected from the farmers' and local market had no variety levels. Since they produced and marketed seeds in the name of "tossa pat" for C. olitorius L. and "deshi pat" for C. capsularis L. After preservation of seed samples following seed quality tests were conducted.Thousand jute seed was counted from the pure seed and their weight was recorded by using an electronic balance.

Seed moisture was measured by oven-dry method. The percentage of moisture content of the seed was determined by the following formula:

( Moisture content (%) =   m2- m3)/(m2 - m1) x 100

Where,

m1 = weight of crucible + lid

m2 = weight of crucible + lid + fresh seed

m1= weight of crucible + lid + dried seed

 One hundred seeds were evenly distributed on the top of a filter paper placed with 5ml. tap water in plastic petri dish. The test was carried out in an incubator at 30±1oC temperature. The germination was recorded after S days and then calculated the germination percentage. All the seed quality data were compiled and analyzed statistically and percentage data of seed germination and moisture were analyzed after square root transformation by following Gomez and Gomez (2).
