Effect of Different Types of Organic Fertilizers on Growth and Yield of Mukhi Kachu (colocasia Esculenta)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at BAU to evaluate the effect of different organic fertilizers on growth and yield of Mukhi kachu. There were eight treatments consisting of T₀: Control, T₁: cowdung @15 t/ha, T₂: Cowdung @7 t/ha, T₃: Poultry manure @12 t/ha, T₄: Poultry manure @6 t/ha, T₅: Mustard oil cake @ 10 t/ha, T₆: Cowdung @ 12 t/ha + poultry manure @ 6 t/ha and T₇: Compost @15 t/ha were used in this investigation. Different organic fertilizers had significantly influenced on most of the growth and yield components of Mukhi kachu. The plant height, number of leaves per main plant, number of suckers per hill, the length and breadth of leaf blade, number of cormel per hill, weight of corm, weight of cormel, yield of corm and cormel were the highest where poultry manure was applied. All results of the experiment demonstrated that the yields of corms and cormels under T3 (Poultry manure @ 12 t/ha) treatment were 23.90 t/ha and 41.80 t/ha respectively.

Objectives:

1. To observe the effect of different types of organic fertilizers on growth and yield of Mukhi Kachu, 2. To find out the most effective organic fertilizer for cultivation of mukhi kachu.

Methodology:

The soil of the experimental plot was silty loam in texture belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain under the Agro-ecological Zone 9. In this research work, cormels of the Mukhi kachu were used as planting material. Average weight of each cormel was 35g. Treatments: The study was consisting of seven treatments and these are outlined below. T₀: Control (No fertilizer), T₁:Cowdung@15t/ha,T₂:Cowdung@7t/ha,T₃:Poultrymanure @ 12t/ha, T₄: Poultry manure @ 6 t/ha, T₅: Mustard oil cake @ 10 t/ha, T₆: Cowdung 12 t/ha + Poultry manure 6 t/ha, T₇: Compost@ 15t/ha. The experiment was conducted following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. At first the experimental plot was divided into three blocks, each of which was then divided into 8 unit plots. The treatments were assigned randomly to the unit plots of each block. The size of a unit plot was 2.5m × 2m. All the organic fertilizers of each treatment were added to the soil at the final land preparation 7 days before planting. Medium size cormels of mukhi kachu was planted in each unit plot. After planting the cormels, the experimental area was kept under careful observation and the following intercultural operations were done. Weeding, Gap filling, Drainage, earthing up and insect controlled. The crop was harvested after 254 days of planting. Data were collected on different yield contributing characters and yield of mukhi kachu. Ten plants were selected from each plot to record data on Plant height, Number of leaves per main plant, Number of sucker per hill, Length of leaf blade, Breadth of leaf blade, Weight of main corm, Dry weight of main corm etc. Data recorded for different parameters studied were complied and tabulated for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with statistical package MSTAT-C. The mean differences among the treatments were tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
