Effect of Mixed/multi-nutrient Fertilizers on Bacterial Leaf Blight of Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of different doses of mixed /multi-nutrient fertilizers (containing 8, 20 , 14 and suA, N, P2 05 , 1<.2 0 and S, respectively) on Bacterial leaf blight (Xanthonwnus oryzae pv. oryzae) severity and yield of boro rice. All the treatments consistently reduced the severity of Bacterial leaf blight of rice as compared with the untreated control. The lowest disease severity was recorded in the plot where 25% less of Aftab recommended doses (i.e. @ 225 kg ha^{- 1} ) of mixed /multinutrient fertilizer applied. The highest (7.74 t ha^{- 1} ) grain yield was recorded in plots where Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council recommended doses of fertilizers applied for high yield goal.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of available multinutrient fertilizers along with recommended doses of fertilizers on the severity of BLB and yield of rice in Boro season .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the boro season of 2003-04. Different doses of mixed /multi-nutrient fertilizers (possessing 8, 20, 14 and 5% N , P₂ 0₅ , K ₂ 0 and S, respectively) were tested on Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) severity and yield of rice (cv . Binadhan-5) . There were ten treatments vi z., T₁ = Control (no krtilizer), T₂ = Farmer's practice (@ I 00, 50, 40, 20 kg ha ^{- 1} ) NPKS from singk fertilizer, T₃= BARC recommended dose for high yield goal (@ 140, 30, 40, 15, 5 kg ha^{- 1}) NPKSZn from single fertilizer, T₄ = BARC recommended dose for medium yield goal( @ 100, 20, 30, 10, 2.5 kg ha^{- 1} of NPKSZn , T:; = Nafco recommended dose @ 300 kg ha^{- 1} , T = 25% more of Nafco recommended dose @ 375 kg ha^{- 1} , T₇ = 25% less of Nafco recommended dose @ 225 kg ha^{- 1} , Tg = Aftab recommended dose @ 300 kg ha^{- 1} , T,) = 25% more of Aftab recommended dose @ 375 kg ha^{- 1} , Tl( = 25% less df Aftab recommended dose @ 225 kg ha^{- 1}. The whole amount of fertilizer except urea were applied as basal in case of single fertili Ler and l/3rd urea was applied at 10 days after transplanting (DAT) , l / 3rd at 25 DA T and the rest 1/ 3rd at Panicle initiation (PI) stage. In case of Nafco (NAFCO, a private enterpreneur marketing mixed / multrinutrient fertilizer) and Aftab (AFTAB Bahumukhi Farms Ltd., a private enterpreneur marketing mixed multrinutrient fertilizer designated as Aftab) multi-nutrients fertilizers, urea @ 80 kg ha^{- 1} was applied as top dressing in two equal splits, in addition to the N fertilizers present in the mixed fertilizers. The split applications were done at 25 DA T and at PI stage. The experiment was laid out in . a randomized complete block design with four replications with a unit plot size of 4.5m x 2 .5m . Thirty five day old and three seedlings per hill were transplanted with the spacing of 25 cm in between rows and 15 cm between hills on 31 January 2004 . Weeding and irrigation were done whenever necessary . At booting stage, 15 hills in each plot were inoculated with the freshly prepared X. oryzae pv. oryzae by clipping method. Bacterial leaf blight severity was assessed after two weeks of inoculation as per Standard Evaluation System for rice developed a.t lRRl (IRRI, 1980). Yield data were taken at harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

In this study the application of balanced or multinutrient fertilizer was found suitable to reduce BLB severity and for higher grain yield. This mixed multinutrient fertilizer might be useful for the management of BLB in rice under farmers condition in Bangladesh.
