Effect of Row Spacing and Nitrogen Levels on the Yield and Yield Aitributes of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during two consecutive rabi seasons of 1994-95 and 1995•96 with the objective to find out optimum row spacing and nitrogen levels for maize composite (Synthetic). Three row spacing (60, 75 and 90 cm) and three N levels (80,120 and 160 kg/ha) were used. The results showed that row spacing had no significant effect on grain yield in both the year but 160 kg N/ha gave significantly highest yield in 1995-96. Average over the years, it was observed that row spacing of 75 cm (With constant plant spacing of 25 cm) and 160 kg/ha of nitrogen could be used for higher grain yield of maize. Yield and Yield attributes of maize were not significantly affected by the interaction between spacing and nitrogen level.

Objectives:

To study the effect of row spacing under different nitrogen levels for maximum yield of maize composite.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jmalpur for two consecutive rabi seasons of 1994-95 and 1995-96. Maize composite (Synthetic) was used as the test crop. The experimental area was an irrigated medium highland of clay loam soil having pH of 6.8. The treatments were there. row spacings viz, 60., 75 and 90. cm. and there nitrogen levels viz, 80., 120. and 160. kg/ha. The experiment was replicated three times in split-plot design. The row spacing was arranged in the main plot while levels of nitrogen in the sub-plat. The unit plot size was 3.6m x5.D m. The land was fertilized with 60. kg P₂0₅ 40. kg K₂0, 20. kg Sand 5 kg Zn per hectare through Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Muriate of Potash (MP), Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, respectively. The source of nitrogen was Urea. The entire amount of TSP, MP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate and 1/3 of urea were applied at the time final land preparation. The rest 2/3 urea was splitted equally and top dressed at 3D and 60. days after emergence (DAE) followed by irrigation. Sowing as done on 1 December in both 1995 and 1996 in lines with plant distance of 25 cm. Initially 2-3 seeds were sown per hill. Ten days after emergence, seedlings were thinned to retain one healthy seedling per hill. One hand weeding was done at 20. DAE. Earthing-up was done at 45 DAE.. The third irrigation was given at 90. DAE. Finally, the plants were harvested on 7 May 1995 and 25 April 1996 respectively. Data on plant height, yield and other parameters I were collected after harvest. The collected data were analyzed statistically and means were separated with LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded from two years results that maize (Synthetic) can be sown 75 cm row spacing with 160. kg/ha of nitrogen for Jamalpur region to obtain higher yield.
