Effect of Container and Treatment with Lemon Grass Extract on Health and Quality of Stored Chilli Seeds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of lemon grass extract at different dilutions on the seed health and germination of Chilli seed was evaluated in laboratory and net house conditions. Four treatments as 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 dilutions of lemon grass extract including a control were studied. Lemon grass extract at 1:1 dilution showed highest germination and most effective in controlling seed borne fungi of chilli. The fungi Colletotrichum capsici, Fusarium moniliforme, Aspergillus lunata, Alternaria tenuis and Cladosporium spp., were most effectively controlled by dipping seeds in the extract of lemon grass at 1:1 dilution for 6 hours. The seeds were stored in different containers. With the increase of storage period germination percent was decreased and percent of storage fungi increased gradually. As regard to different containers, the highest germination and lowest seed borne infections of fungi was obtained in tin container followed by plastic container, polythene and gunny bag.

Objectives:

1. To determine the effect of lemon grass extract on seed borne infection of stored chilli seed, to determine the effect of different storage containers and storage period on the health of chilli seeds.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted as MS thesis in the laboratory, greenhouse and net house of seed pathology centre (SPC), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. The seed sample of Chilli was collected from the Mausumy Beej Bitan, Natun Bazar, Mymensingh. The experiments were carried out during the period from the period January to November 2009. Preparation of plant extract: Leaves of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) were used to prepare the extract. Matured green leaves of lemon grass were collected from the Field Laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, BAU, Mymensingh. The collected leaves were washed under running tap water. The leaves were chopped into small pieces and weighed by an electric balance. The extract was prepared by grinding in a mortar and pestle followed by crushing the plant parts in an electric blender with distilled water. To get 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 dilutions of extracts, 1ml, 2ml and 3ml distilled water were added, respectively with 1g of leaf tissue. So, 100g lemon grass leaves were crushed in 100 ml water to have an extract of 1:1 dilution. Effect of seed treatment with lemon grass extract on seed health and germination of Chilli seeds was conducted. Health and Quality of Chilli seeds stored after lemon grass extract treatment was examined.
