Field Performance of Spaced Transplanting Technique of Sugarcane Cultivation in Three Northern Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field survey was conducted to study the relationship between the STP technique of sugarcane cultivation and some selected agronomic factors namely, selection of variety. nature of preceding crops, irrigation and time of transplanting during the 1991-92 cropping season. A total of 110 STP cane growers from three sugar mills zone areas (Panchagar sugar mills, Thakurgaon sugar mills and Setabganj sugar mills) were interviewed for this study. Among varieties, Isd 16 gave the highest mean yield of 97.76 tons ha^-1followed by the Isd 18 variety (89.4 tons ha^-1) with the lowest mean yield of 82.0 tons ha^-1 from the Isd 2154 variety. STP cane grown after fallow or harvesting of BR-11 paddy variety produced the maximum yield compared with other preceding crops. The level of irrigation applied to STP cane field failed to show any difference between the mean yield values of low and high irrigation levels. Early transplanting (September) of STP cane gave the highest mean yield of 116.4 tons ha" while the other late transplanting canes gave the lowest cane yield ranging from 82.4 to 89.9 tons ha^-1. Furthermore, a significant association between the yield of STP cane and the above mentioned agronomic factors was observed at 0.001 level.

Objectives:

To find out the yield performance of STP cane and the relationship between some important agronomic factors with yield of STP cane in farmers conditions.

Methodology:

The study was conducted through a field survey in mill zone sugarcane growing areas of the three northern districts during 1991-92 cropping season. Data were collected through a specially prepared and pre-tested questionnaire. Purposive sampling was done from the STP cane growers of three sugar mills (namely), Panchagarh sugar mills (PSM), Thakurgaon sugar mills (TSM) and Setabganj sugar mills (STSM). Thus, 110 STP cane growers were interviewed during November, 1993 to February, 1994. Data were also collected for the crop in the previous cropping year (1991-92). After collection of data, those were arranged systematically and analyzed statistically for the purpose of the study. Statistical treatments: Data were compiled categorically on the basis of the factors. Range, mean and standard deviation were calculated to explain the categories and chi-squire test was used to explain the null hypothesis for the relationship between the STP cane yield and the selected agronomic factors viz. selection of variety, time of transplanting, nature of the preceding crops, and irrigation
