Crop Weed Competition in Maize + Blackgram in Sole and Inter Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Crop weed competition in maize sole and maize + blackgrarn intercropping system was studied in the early kharif season or 1994 and 1995. The highest maize equivalent yield, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio were recorded from one hand weeding 42 DAS (days after seeding) and earthing up 21 DAS. But in maize sole situation, two hand weedings 21 and 42 DAS with earthing up 21 DAS showed higher benefit cost ratio than the other treatments at Joydebpur. At Raikhali. highest gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio were recorded from two hand weedings 21 and 42 DAS with earthling up at 21 DAS in sole and intercropped situation. On an average, intercropped situation showed higher benefit cost (2.78) than sale maize (2.67) with two hand weedings.

Objectives:

To determine the most critical period of crop-weed competition in maize + blackgram intercropping system.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted during the early kharif season of 1994 and 1995 at the Central Station, Joydebpur, Gazipur and ARS, Raikhali. The soil of Joydebpur was silty clay with pH 6.3, belonging to Chiatta series of Grey Terrace type, having moderately slow permeability but soil of Raikhali was clay loam having pH 5.8. The trial was set up in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Sole maize (var. Mohar) seeds were sown in rows 75 cm x 25 cm apart on 13 April 1994 and 5 April 1995 at Joydebpur and 16 April 1994 and 29 April 1995 at Raikhali. respectively. Four rows of blackgram 25 cm apart (var. Barimash) were grown between maize paired row (37.5 cm row distance, 150 cm between two pairs of rows). Treatments were: T ₁ = Earthing up only 2 I DAS in sole maize, T₂ = T₁ + one hand weeding (HW) 21 DAS, T₃ = T₁+ One HW 42 DAS, T₄ = Earthing up only 21 DAS MPR + blackgram, T₅ = T₅+ one HW 21 DAS, T₆ = T₅ + One HW 21 DAS, T₇ = T₅ + One HW 42 DAS and Tg = T₅ + Two HW 21 and 42 DAS. During land preparation, phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen were applied at the rate of 60 kg P₂0₅, 40 kg K₂0 and 40 kg N per hectare .in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and urea, respectively. Additional 80 kg N/ha was applied as sidedressing in maize rows only in two equal splits at 21 and 42 days after seeding (DAS). Irrigation was not given due to enough rainfall during the growth period. Weed samples were taken from two random places of each plot using a 0.25 m² quadrat at different times of weeding. The blackgram crop was harvested on 10 July 94 (Ist picking), 17 July 94 (2nd picking) and the maize crop was harveted on 25 July 94. In the second year, blackgram was harvested on 21 July and the maize was harvested on 8 July, 95, respectively at Joydebpur. The yields of maize and blackgram were recorded. maize and maize equivalent yield was calculated. Weeds were identified and dry matter of weeds was oven-dried at 70°C for 48 hours. The economics of different treatments were computed on the basis of prevailing ling market price of maize and blackgram.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above results, it reveals that one hand weeding (42 DAS) with earthing up (21 DAS) is neeassary for maize + blackgram intercropping system. But for sole maize two hand weedings 21 and 42 DAS with earthing up 21 DAS is required for Joydebpur. At Raikhali, two hand weedings (21 and 42 DAS) with earthing up is required for maize + blackgram intercropping system and similar trend was noted in sale situation.
