Proximate Composition of Aestuans-olitorius Jute and Its Comparision with Other Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The proximate composition such as cellulose, pentosan, lignin, ash, pectin and extractives of unretted bark and retted fibre of different ages of aestuans- olitorius (NO) jute (a hybrid derivative of intcrvarictal cross of Corcltorus aestuans and C. olitoriusy were determined and it was compared with Dhabdhabey (S-718, a hybrid derivative), C. capsularis and C. olitorius. Objectives:

To find out Aestuans-Olitorius Jute's compositional difference in apparent quality and characteristics with those of other varieties

Methodology:

The plant A-O is a hybrid derivative from intervarietal cross of C. aestuans and C. olitorius was collected (about 10 weeks old) from an experimental station of Botany Department of Dhaka University, Dhaka. The jute plant was about 30 em long. The top portion (6 em) was separated from the plant and from the remaining part (24 ern) the bark and stem were separated manually. Thus three different samples: unreucd bark (UJB), unretted stick (UJS) and the top portion were obtained. These were marked as 2B, 2S and 2C, respectively. Again A/O jute of about 18 and 24 weeks old were collected from the same experimental station. The bark was separated from the stick manually. A portion of the bark of both 18 and 24 weeks old were immediately submerged in a tumbler containing pond water for retting for two weeks, water hyacinth was used to cover the bark during retting. After retting the fibre was collected, washed well and dried in the sun. Thus unretted bark (UJB), retted fibre (RJF) and unretted stick (UJS) of both 18 and 24 weeks old were obtained and these were marked as 3B, 3R, 3S and 4B, 4R, 4S, respectively. All these samples were extracted separately with 80% aqueous alcohol and the residues obtained after extraction were air dried and powered in a grinding machine. The materials thus obtained were termed as extractive free powder. The raw samples (2B, 2S, 2C, 3B, 3R etc) and extractive free powders were used throughout the investigations. Reagents and apparatus: The chemicals and solvents used in all preparative and analytical investigations were standard reagent grade procured from E. Merck of Germany and BDH of England. Always distilled solvents were used and all evaporations were performed in rotary vacuum evaporator (Buchii, Switzerland) at temperature not exceed- ing 40 C. For moisture determination electrical oven (Electrolux) and for ash content electrical furnace (Carbo lite, England) were used. Extraction of the samples with 80% aqueous alcohol: The different samples 3B, 2S, etc, were extracted overnight with 80% aqueous alcohol at room temperature. The extracts thus obtained were evaporated to dryness and the percentage of 80% aqueous alcohol extracts are found . Analytical procedure : The major constituents like pentosans, ash moisture and extractives of all the samples were determined according to standard T APPI methods (TAPPI 1957). The lignin was determined by a modified method (Theander et al. 1979) and pectin was determined by a standard method (Timcl 1957).

Achievement/Findings:

High cellulose and low lignin content of A-O jute appear to be very significant compared to the other varieties. The low lignin content especially the similarity in lignin content of unretted bark and retted fibre of A-O jute is likely to contribute to the process industries at least in terms of cost reduction
