Effect of Mixed and Intercropping Chickpea with Linseed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station of BARI, Joydebpur and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during rabi 1992-93 and 1993-94 to study the effect of mixed and intercropping of chickpea with linseed at different population levels. Average over the years showed that the highest yields of chickpea 0.56 t/ha and 1.88 t/ha) and linseed (0.88 t/ha) were obtained from their respective sole crops at Joydebpure and Jessore. But highest chickpea equivalent (2.03 t/ha), net return (Tk 23113/ha) and benefit cost ratio (4.60) were obtained from two rows of chickpea alternate with one row of linseed (67 C: 33 L) at Jessore but chickpea showed higher monetary advantage at Joydebpur.

Objectives:

To evaluate the economic benefit of mixed and intercropping system under rainfed condition

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition at the Central Research Station of BARI, Joydebpur and RARS, Jessore during rabi seasons of 1992-93 and 1993-94. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 5 m x 3.6 m. The nine treat-ments were T_I = Sale chickpea (C) (30 cm x 10 cm), T₂ = Sole linseed (L) (30 cm x 5 cm), T₃ = Chickpea broadcast (100%) in between linseed lines spaced at 90 cm (100 C : 33.31), T₄ = Two rows of chickpea alternate with 1 row of linseed (67 C: 331), T₅ = Two rows of chickpea alternate with 2 rows of linseed (50 C : 50 L), T₆ = Three rows of chickpea alternate with 1 row of linseed (75 C : 25 L), T₇ = Chickpea 75% + Linseed 25% (broadcast), T₈ = Chickpea 50% + linseed 50% (broadcast) and T₉ = Chickpea (100%) + Linseed 25% (broadcast). Seed of chickpea (var. Nabin) and linseed (var. Nila) were sown on 14 November 1992 and 10 November 1993 at Joydebpur and 17 November 1992 and 15 November 1993 at Jessore, respectively. A fertilizer dose of 20, 40, 40, 20, and 5 kg/ha of N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S, and Zn were used for sole chickpea, inter and mixed-crop treatments while 80, 60, 40, 20, and 5 kg/ha of N, P₂0₅, K₂0,S, and Zn for sole linseed. All fertilizers were applied as basal at the time of final land preparation in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. During the cropping period, only 83.4 mm and 93.5 mm rainfall was obtained in 1992-93 and 138.0 mm and 55.5 mm in 1993-94 at Joydebpur and Jessore, respectively. Rainfall was mainly concentrated in the month of February to March i.e., pod filling to maturity stage. Pooled data were used in discussing the results.
