Spawning Frequencies and Breeding Seasons of the Indigenous Small Fish, Puntius Chola (ham.) of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the spawning frequencies and breeding seasons of the indigenous small fish, Puntius chola (Ham.) of Bangladesh was carried out at Dhaka University Campus in two mini ponds (each measured 0.004 ha). Two methods, viz. measurement of intra-ovarian eggs and gonado- somatic index (GSI) were used to assess the spawning frequencies and breeding seasons of the fish. Objectives:

To study on the spawning frequencies and breeding seasons of the indigenous small fish, Puntius chola (Ham.) of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The research work was conducted at the Dhaka University Campus. Two miniponds were used for the culture of P. chola. Each minipond measured approximately 40 m²(0.004 ha) in total surface area with an average depth of 1.37 m. Before stocking offish, each pond was provided with a basket of cow dung and 1 kg of powdered lime. Urea, T.8.P. and M.P. were supplied three times a year at the rate of 75 kg/ha each. A common supplementary feed comprising rice-bran (50%) and oil-cake (50%) at the rate of 1% of the body weight of the fishes was supplied daily in each pond. For stocking, fishes were collected from the river near Mirpur, Dhaka. The fishes were caught with a 'dharma jal' (dip net) and brought alive to the research area for stocking in polythene bag filled with oxygen-mixed water. The mini ponds were stocked with fishes at the same rate of 200 fishes/40 m² for two replications each year and repeated for the next year. To assess spawning frequencies and breeding seasons, the following methods were used. Measurement of intra-ovarian eggs: Ripe ovaries of P. chola were taken out by dissecting female fishes before and after spawning, cut into small portions and fixed in Bouin's fluid. On hardening, they were opened in glass dishes and ova were carefully separated out and measured under a compound microscope with an ocular micrometer. Sections were cut at 6 microns for making histological slides. Diameters of 3,000 - 4,000 eggs were measured indiscriminately. Ten average-sized specimens were selected for the oocyte study. For ova diameter measurements, the procedures suggested by Dan(⁹) were followed.
