Interaction of Chromium with N, P and K in Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum Cv. Roma Vf)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted using simulated nutrient culture solution with different chromium concentrations to investigate the uptake behavior, interactions with nutrient elements N P K and growth of tomato plants. Chromium (0.3, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 ppm) significantly reduced both fresh and dry matter production of roots and shoots. The highest reduction of plant material was observed at 4.0 ppm Cr. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake were also severely decreased by chromium stress. Tomato plants grown in ≥1.0 ppm Cr in nutrient solution accumulated significantly higher amounts of Cr than the control, the highest being at 4.0 ppm. Roots accumulated more Cr resulting in restricted translocation to the shoot. Chromium up to 0.2 ppm in hydroponic solution neither affected root and shoot development nor antagonized the uptake of N, P and K in tomato plants .

Objectives:

To investigate soil to plant transfer to Cr and its phytotoxic limits in crop plants commonly grown in the contaminated soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out using hydroponics containing N : 4.0, P 0.5, S : 1.3, K: 2.5, Ca : 1.3 and Mg : O.B mmol/1. The pH of the nutrient solution was maintained at 6.0 throughout the experiment by adding acid or alkali solution. Micronutrients in this experiment were used according to Steineck. The total concentration of the nutrient solution was 0.86%. Fourteen. days old tomato seedlings of uniform size were transplanted into plastic pots containing 1.3 litre nutrient solutions. One week after transplantation, the tomato plants were exposed to Cr stresses. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with several treatments (0, 0.2, 0.3, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 ppm Cr) and three replicates were used. The nutrient solutions were renewed twice a week. Tomato plants were harvested eight weeks after transplantation and separated into roots and shoots, which were then well washed with deionized distilled water for 3 to 5 times and dried at 80°C for a week and ground in a grinding mill. Total N concentrations in tomato shoots and roots were determined by Micro-Kjeldahl's methods following H₂S0₄ digestion The total P, K and Cr concentrations were measured after wet oxidation, which were performed by digestion with HCI0₄-HN0₃ mixture (1 : 5) as reported by Ullah et al.

Achievement/Findings:

Chromium accumulation gradually increased in the root and in the shoot with the increase in external chromium concentration (1 - 4 ppm). Accumulation of Cr in the root was higher than that in the shoot. This was due to the tightly binding up of Cr at the negative sites of the roots (anionic sites), which restricted its translocation to the shoots. On the other hand total amount of Cr in tomato plants were higher in shoots than in roots .
