Efect of Missing Hills on Grain Yield and Yield Componants of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of missing hills on the grain yield and yield components of rice (BR14 and BR23) was studied. Missing hills significantly affected grain yield, number of, panicles per hill, panicle length and spikelets per panicle. With the increase in percentage of missing hills (10 to 90%) the panicle number per hill became almost double in both the varieties; the panicle length increased by about 5 cm in BR23 and about 4 cm in BRI4. The highest spikelet number per panicle was found with 80%.missing hills in BR23 and with 60% missing hills in BR14. Ninety percent missing hills gave the highest filled grain percentage. However, the number of missing hills and grain yield showed a negative correlation. The yields obtained from 0% and 10% missing hills were statistically similar in BR23 and it was identical up to 20% missing hills in BR14. Results indicated that yield loss compensation through improvement in yield contributing character is possible only up to certain level of missing hills.

Objectives:

This study investigated the magnitude of yield loss due to missing hills and the way of compensation of the yield contributing attributes of rice plant.

Methodology:

Two field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) experimental farm, Gazipur, one in the transplanted Aman season (August to December) of 1989 and another in the transplanted Aus season (April to August) of 1990. The trails were conducted under irrigated condition. There were 10 treatments including a control (no missing hills). The treatments on missing hills consisted of 10 to 90% missing hills. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 4.6 m x 2.6 m which could accommodate 200 hills at a spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm. Each plot was fertilized with N, P, K, S and Zn at the rate of 60, 40, 20,10 and 3 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S and Zn respectively per ha. The full doses of P, K, S and Zn were applied at final land preparation. N was applied in 2 equal splits: at the maximum tillering stage and at the panicle initiation stage.

In the T. Aman season, 30-day-old seedlings of BR23 and in the Aus season 21-day-old seedlings of BR14 were transplanted at the rate of two seedlings per hill. The position of the missing hills in any one plot were randomly determined and the levels of missing hills were attained by,promoting the required number of hills 10 days after transplantation (DT). Twelve hills were randomly selected from each plot at maturity for collecting data on the following characters-plant height, number of panicles per hill, length of panicle, number of spikelets per panicle, % filled grain and weight of 1000 filled grains. Crop harvest was done from whole plots excluding two border rows in each plot. Grain yield per plot was recorded after adding the grain weight of 12 hills collected earlier.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the two experiments indicate that 10 to 20 percent missing hills do not affect the total grain yield' of rice. Therefore, the threshold level of missing hills in rice could be anywhere 'between 10 to 20 percent.
