Effect of Acceleratd Aging on Germination and Seedling Emergence O0f Some Rice Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted both at the agronomy laboratory and field of the Bangladesh Rice Research institute (BRRI), Gazipur during Boro and Aus seasons, 1990 to study the effect of accelerated aging on germination and seedling emergence of some rice cultivvars, Cultivars used were BR1, BR14, Pashusalil and Banazira in Boro season and BR1, BR3, BR8, BR14, BR20, Dular and Katakatra in aus season, Two day accelerated ageing at 40 degree C and 100% relative humidity had an stimulating effect on increasing percent germination and seediling emer4gence. Bt t6he ageing treatment extended to duration of tour to six days markedly depressed the above ccharacter for both the group of seeds in boro and aus seasongs.

Objectives:

The present study was -aimed at determination of the -effects of accelerated ageing, of seeds under different duration of ageing treatments at a particular temperature and relative humidity: (RH) which could be correlated with the duration of: natural ageing.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted at'Gazipur, both in the field and iaboratory.. Four rice varieties viz.- BR1,_ii Ri4 Rashusa -and Banazira were grown in. Born season and.xtinevarieties namely BRt, BR317 BR8 BR9, BRI2,. BR14, BR20; OuIar and Kataktara were grown-in Aus season

during 1990. The^, time ;of sowing of different varieties in -each season was synchronize, on the basis of growth duration of each variety, so that all the varieties matured at the same time. Sprouted seeds were sown on a wet-seedbed of one meter length. At 10 and 20 days after ceding, seedbeds were sprayed- with.ihseeticide tp protect- the young seedlings' from ..insect damage.. Folly five and 30-day old seedlings.- in-, 8oro and Aus seasons --respectivefWwere transplafited in-the main Held= h 2-3 seedlings per full at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. The plot size.

Achievement/Findings:

It-was' observed that in case of 2-day accelerated ageing treatment, the average percent seedling emergence was slightly higher in Aus season and significantly higher in Boro season than the control treatment. As ageing continued, percent seedling emergence was drastically reduced. Similar findings were reported by Byrd (1970).. This declination in seedling emergence percentage was due to physiological and biochemical factors associated with the adverse effect of accelerated ageing on germination as were reported by many workers in the past. During the process of ageing, Proteins with high mobility are denatured (Nautiyal et al, 1985). ageing also

has been reported to cause decrease in Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase activity with out any loss in

seed germination (Mora and Echandi, 1976; Azizul Islam and Delouche, 1973), that might be the reason even after the germinated seed could not emerge from the soil. Glucose utilization also impaired in seedlings emerging from aged seeds (Banerjee and Ghosh, 1977-1978). However, in respect of seedling emergence BR1 can be regarded as the tolerant variety for Boro and BR8 and BR3 in Aus season.
