Minimization of Drought in T. Aman in the Northwest Region-2006

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The severity and duration of drought in rainfed Aman rice cultivation were simulated by Drought Simulation Model on a daily basis by a conceptual water balance model. The transplanting periods, which were identified as low, medium and high risks for the three varieties (one existing and two tested varieties) were presented that the length of low risk transplanting period for V120 was bigger than those for other two varieties. The low risk-transplanting period for V120 was from 15 June to 25 July in seven out of nine locations, whereas that for V140 was from 15 June to 5 July also in seven locations. That was to say, farmers will get 20 days more for transplanting if they plan to transplant V120 instead of V140 in low risk-transplanting period. The result also showed that the transplanting period, which was medium risk for V140, was low risk for V120.

Objectives:

To develop a simulation model to quantify drought;
To quantify severity and extent of drought during crop growing period; and
To develop guidelines for drought minimization for the region.

Methodology:

Drought in this study stands for an event (occurred at any growth stage of the crop) during which rainfall and soil moisture together fail to meet consumptive use of the crop. Nine locations from northwest region of Bangladesh were selected and they were Shibgang, Mohadebpur, Godagari, Nachole, Natore, Nandigram, Naogaon, Dupchachia and Lalpur. Daily rainfall and evaporation data for a period of 30 years (1971-2000) of the above 9 locations were collected from Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) and Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). Soil characterestics data of the location were collected from Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI). Seepage and percolation data for the region were collected from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). Three different rice varieties having growth durations of 120, 140 and 160 days were selected for the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The drought amounts remain almost same during reproductive and ripening stages when this variety was transplanted between 15 and 25 June and drought increases during ripening stage for transplanting after this period. Drought amounts during reproductive stage were almost unchanged when transplanting was done by 5 July and begin to increase for transplanting after this date. So transplanting periods from 26 June to 5 July and after 5 July was considered medium and high risks respectively for the variety. During vegetative stage, drought amounts start to increase if V160 was transplanted after 15 July whereas droughts increase at Rep and Rip stages for transplanting before 15 July.
