Students Attitude Towards the Use of Internet and Modern Teaching Aids in Studying Entomology at Undergraduate Level

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted with the students of B. Sc. Ag (Hons.) 8^th semester (Level-4, Semester-II) of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, to know their response and attitude towards the use of internet and modern teaching aids specially multimedia and white board in studying entomology at undergraduate level. Findings revealed that majority of the students had medium level of knowledge and medium to high skill ness, respectively towards the use of internet. During multimedia presentation in class room, the attentiveness of the majority students had also medium to the presentation of a teacher. The most of the students (65%) had low awareness about use of internet and multimedia for studying biological science especially entomology. Fifty eight per cent of students had medium effectiveness in receiving information through browsing net and slide show presentation by multimedia. Among the methods of delivering lecture by a course teacher in class room, only oral presentation without writing was not accepted by any students whereas majority of students (66.7%) opined to deliver lecture in class room through oral and multimedia presentation. In case of lecture note supplied, 49.2% students opined to supply detailed note by the course teacher, 34.2% students opined to supply points only and after that the note will be prepared by the student and only 16.7% students opined to supply brief note. Among the teaching aids used in class room, 40% students opined simultaneous use of white board and power point presentation through multimedia whereas 34.2% gave their opinion to use white board and marker. It may be concluded that browsing net and slide show presentation are moderately effective in studying entomology. Simultaneous use of multimedia and writing in white board is the most effective way to improve the quality of delivering lecture in class room and student’s perception.

Objectives:

To know their response and attitude towards the use of internet and modern teaching aids specially multimedia and white board in studying entomology at undergraduate level.

Methodology:

The students of B. Sc. Ag (Hons.) 8^th semester (Level-4, Semester-II) of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh who were involved in receiving entomological information by course teacher through different teaching aids were purposively selected as the study group. Oral presentation and writing in black board, oral presentation and writing in white board, oral presentation and slide show using multimedia and recently from internet, materials through e-mail and net browsing from web pages etc were considered as teaching aids for the study. Out of 132 students, a total of 120 students were selected randomly as the sample for this study. In order to collect the valid and reliable information from the students, an interview schedule was carefully designed and pretested keeping the objectives of the study in mind. Simple and direct questions and different scales (low up to 5, medium 6-10 and high above 10) were used to obtain information. Data were collected through personal interviewing the sampled students during 15 May to 10 June 2012. The dependent variable of the study was “use of internet and modern teaching aids”. The independent variables of the study were students characteristics which include level of knowledge, skill ness of using internet and web, attentiveness to multimedia presentation, awareness about internet and browsing, effectiveness of listening and learning from power point presentation, method of delivering lecture, nature of supplying lecture note and use of teaching aids in class room.The SPSS computer package program was used to analyze the statistical measures such as number and percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation (SD) which were used in describing selective characteristics of the students.

Internet and modern teaching aids help in achieving practical knowledge in various aspects of entomology. These facilitate easy and clear understanding of different insect images, nature of damage caused by insect pests and their stages of life cycle. These are the most effective in showing graphs, topic related image and video clips to increase the knowledge level of students and present or current condition of applied field of entomology. These also help in identifying the insects, gathering detailed information of a specific insect and preparing lecture note along with necessary pictures/images. These may be treated as time saving tools in class room presentation. Finally these are used to acquire update information through net browsing in various fields of entomological study and research areas. Finally, browsing net and slide show presentation are moderately effective in studying entomology. Simultaneous use of multimedia and writing in white board is the most effective way to improve the quality of delivering lecture in class room and student’s perception.
