Field experiment was carried out at the research field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during March to July, 2009 (Summer season) to study the effect of insecticides (seven synthetic & two botanicals) on the incidence and infestation of aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) infesting lablab bean. Result revealed that the lowest incidence of aphid was observed in Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml/L water (87.74/plot) and the highest in untreated control (299.60/plot). The highest percentage of aphid incidence reduction over control was achieved by Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml/L water (70.71%). The highest number of inflorescence was recorded from Decis 2.5 EC @ 1 ml/L water (40.61/plot) and Sumithion 50 EC @ 1.5 ml/L water (24.33/plot) treated plots. The lowest number of infested inflorescence was counted from Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml/L water (1.78/plot) and the highest was in untreated control (6.05/plot). The highest percentage of infested inflorescence (by number) reduction over control was observed by Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml/Lwater (70.58%). For percent inflorescence infestation, the lowest was observed by Decis 2.5 EC @ 1 ml/L water (5.78%) and highest in untreated control (20.09%). Maximum reduction of inflorescence infestation over control was achieved by Decis 2.5 EC @ 1 ml/L water (71.23%). Decis 2.5 EC @ 1 ml/L water and Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml/L water may be used for the effective control of aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch).

To find out the insecticides which are effective for controlling aphid in country bean field.

The study was conducted at the research field of Entomology Department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during summer season (March to July 2009). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatment: The treatments comprised of nine insecticides application and one untreated control. The treatments were: T1= Ripcord 10 EC @ 1ml/L of water, T2= Sumithion 50 EC @ 1.5 ml/L of water, T3= Fenfen 20 EC @ 1 ml/L of water, T4= Proclaim 5 SG @ 1 gm/L of water, T5= Decis 2.5 EC @ 1 ml/L of water, T6= Sumialpha 5 EC @ 1 ml/L of water, T7= Suntap 50 SP @ 2 gm/L of water, T8= Neem oil (fresh) @ 2.5 ml/L of water, T9= Neem oil (stored) @ 2.5 ml/L of water, T10= Untreated control. The synthetic insecticides were collected from the local market of Gazipur. The fresh Neemoil was collected from Ghani mill located at Kakonhat bazar, Godagari, Chapai Nawabgonj and the stored Neemoil was stored at room temperature for sixteen (16) months collected from entomology laboratory of the University. The insecticides were sprayed at 10 days interval from first flowering to last harvest of country bean covering the whole plant canopy. The spraying was done in the afternoon to avoid bright sunlight and drift caused by strong wind and adverse effect on pollinating insects. At each time of treatment application, drift of chemicals to adjacent plots were avoided by using polythene sheet.

Incidence of aphid

For the purpose of studying the aphid incidence all plants in the plot were closely observed twice a week. For recording the aphid incidence, top 5 cm of infested inflorescence was considered and number of aphid at each infested inflorescence was counted by gently brushing off the aphid in a Petri-dish with the help of magnifying glass. The number of total inflorescence as well as aphid infested inflorescence was counted for each plot. Data were collected from the experimental plots on the following parameters:

  • Total number of inflorescence per plot
  • Number of infested inflorescence per plot
  • Number of aphid in the top 5 cm of infested inflorescence
  • Rate of infestation

The collected data were properly compiled, coded, tabulated and analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C software. Means were separated for significant difference using the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
