Study of Heterosis in Aromatic Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out at the Genetics and Plant Breeding Research Farm as well as in the Genetics and Seed Technology laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during August 2007 to Nobvember 2008 to assess heterotic response of eight F₁s of aromatic rice for seven characters. Both positive and negative heterosis was found among the F₁s. The cross combinations IR58025A x KataribhogR (-13.79%) and IR62829A x ChiniguraR (-9.09%) showed the highest significant heterotic effect for earliness of flowering. For maturity of spikelet (-13.79%), grains per panicle (20.91%) and grain yield per plant (21.42%), the cross IR58025A x KataribhogR showed the highest significant heterotic effect. The cross combination IR68888A x SakorkhoraR showed the highest significant hetrotic effect for panicles per plant (50.48%). These crosses could be used for exploitation of heterosis in aromatic rice.

Objectives:

To identify the cross combinations with high heterotic value for yield and yield component characters and to determine the heterosis/hybrid vigour of the crossed material.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Genetics and Plant Breeding Research Farm as well as in the Genetics Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) during the period from, August 2007 to November 2008 to assess heterosis of aromatic rice. Seven parents and eight cross materials of aromatic rice germplasm were used in this experiment. Parent materials: IR58025A, IR62829A, IR68888A, Gan46A, KataribhogR, ChiniguraR and SakorkhoraR.Cross materials: IR58025A x KataribhogR, IR62829A x KataribhogR, IR68888A x KataribhogR, Gan 46A x ChiniguraR, IR62829A x ChiniguraR, IR68888 x ChiniguraR, IR68888 x SakorkhoraR and IR58025A x SakorkhoraR.The experiment was conducted using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and plot size was 6.5 x 5.9 m². Single seedling/hill was transplanted maintaining 20 x 25 cm spacing from plant to plant and row to row, respectively. Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied @ 200, 100, 50 and 60 Kg/ha, respectively as recommendation for rice cultivation by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). All agronomic practices and fertilizers application were kept uniform and normal for all treatments.

Estimation of heterosisPercent heterosis over better parent (BP) for each character was calculated as follows Heterosis (BP) = [(F₁- BP)/BP] x 100

Here, (BP) = is the mean value (over replications) of the better parent of a particular cross. The significance test was done by using standard error of the value of better parent.Percent heterosis over mid parent (MP) for each character was calculated as follows Heterosis (MP) = [(F₁- MP)/MP] x 100

Here, MP = is the average mean value (over replications) of the two parents of a particular cross. The significance test for heterosis was done by using standard error of the value of mid parent.The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT software to find out the significance of variation resulting from the experimental treatments. The difference among the treatment means were judged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The cross combinations IR58025 A x Kataribhog R showed the highest significant heterotic effect over mid parent for earliness of flowering, grains/panicle, spikelet maturity and grain yield/plant. On the other hand, the cross combination IR68888A x SakorkhoraR performed better for tillers and panicles/plant. These crosses could be used in exploitation of heterosis in aromatic rice.
