Study on Optimal Utilization of Rainwater for High Yielding Rice Cultivation in the Coastal Region of Bangladesh.-2006

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment were conducted at Khulna with the objectives of to maximize rainwater utilization for increasing productivity in T Aman season; and to document the performance of T Aman rice after the harvest of Aus rice in the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh. All the tested rice varieties performed well in the coastal region. BR11 produced the highest yield (5.1 t/ha) followed by BR10 and BRRI dhan41. Yield of BRRI dhan33 was about 4 t/ha, the lowest among the tested rice varieties. But the main advantage is that BRRI dhan33 can be harvested more than 20 days earlier than other tested varieties. Farmers can go for Boro rice cultivation early enough and thus could avoid the harmful effect of soil and river water salinity at the later growth stage of rice. Among the tested rice varieties BRRI dhan41 had the tallest plant (128 cm), which is also an important character in terms of prevailing water management system within the polder area of the coastal region.The common practice is to maintain 40-80 cm, sometimes more than 100 cm water in the rice field diverting free river water through sluice gates installed mainly to drain out excess water from the field in the rainy season. But yield of BRRI dhan41 was lower than BR10 and BR11. Therefore, where the water depth remained less than a meter, BR10 and BR11 could be grown and could also be fitted in Aus-Aman pattern to improve productivity and livelihood of the farming community residing in the coastal region of Bangladesh. On the other hand, BRRI dhan33 could be one of the options for advancing Boro rice cultivation in the region and improve productivity by adopting Aman-Boro cropping pattern, where sufficient river water is available in Boro season.

Objectives:

To maximize rainwater utilization for increasing productivity in T Aman season; and
To document the performance of T Aman rice after the harvest of Aus rice in the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Previous study showed that topsoil salinity remained below 4.0 dS/m during July to December. Therefore, an experiment was setup in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) at Fultola village under Batiaghata Upazila of Khulna district to document the performance of HYV rice after the harvest of pre-monsoon/aus rice in the coastal region and to maximize rainwater utilization for increasing productivity of T Aman season. Tested rice varieties were BR10, BR11, BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan41. Individual plot size was 4.6 m x 10.0 m. About 30 days old seedlings were transplanted on 30 August, 2005 after proper land preparation with the spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm. Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 180/150-100-70-60-10 kg urea-TPP-MP-Gypsum-Zinc sulfate per ha. The growth duration of BRRI dhan33 was shorter than other tested HYV rice, for that 150 kg urea per ha was applied for this variety and 180 kg/ha for other HYV rice varieties owing their long growth duration. The whole amounts of P, K, Zn and S were applied at the time of final land preparation except urea, one-third of which was applied as basal and the rest two-third were applied in three equal splits at an interval of 10 days (adopted this schedule presuming excessive water depth in the field from October and onward and observed 40-60 cm water depth in the field).
