Effect of Harvesting Stage for Quality Vegetable Production of Different Varieties of Bushbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment with three varieties [BARI Jharsheem-1, BARI Jharsheem-2 and BARI Jharsheem-3] and seven harvesting time was conducted during rabi season of 2013-14 at Agronomy research field Joydebpur to find out suitable time of harvesting for quality vegetable production of French bean varieties. Significantly the highest pod yield (23.23 t ha^-1) was recorded from BARI Jharsheem-2 when harvested at 15 days after flowering (DAF). The lowest pod yield was obtained from BARI Jharsheem-3 harvested at 9 days after flowering (DAF ) but pod harvested at 10-12 days after flowering of bush bean was the best for quality of vegetable.

Objectives:

The present experiment was conducted to maximize quality vegetable production of bush bean from different harvesting stage.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi seasons of 2013-2014. The soil belongs to the Chhiata Series under Agro-Ecological Zone-28 (AEZ-28). The soil was clay loam and acidic in nature (pH 6.1). The treatments comprised seven harvesting stage viz. 9, 10 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 days after flowering (DAF) and three varieties like BARI Jharsheem-1, BARI Jharsheem-2 and BARI Jharsheem-3 were used. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.0 m x 3.0 m. The crop was fertilized with 120-40-60 -12-3 N-P₂O₅-K₂O-S-Zn ha^-1, respectively (FRG, 2012). Half of N and full doses of other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation and the rest urea was top dressed 35 days after sowing (DAS). Seeds was treated with vitavax and sown continuously in 30 cm apart rows. Plant to plant distance was maintained by 15 cm. Seeds of bush bean were sown on 25 November, 2013 and weeding was done at 25 and 40 days after sowing (DAS). Pre sowing irrigation was given to the crop for uniform emergence. The crop was attacked by cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon) and hairy caterpillar (Spilarctia obliqua) at early growth (vegetative) stage. The cutworm was controlled through hand picking Perfecthion 40EC @ 2.0 ml L^-1of water was sprayed at an interval of 7-10 days for 3 times to control hairy caterpillar. At each harvesting time, five plants were harvested randomly from each plot to record the data on yield components. Pod yield was recorded from an area of 3 m x 2 m avoiding border effect. Data on consuming quality was also recorded. Twenty people were selected to test the entire sample and their options were noted. Consuming quality was classified as softness, hardness and tastiness. Data on different parameters were subjected to analysis of variance and the treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on consuming quality of bush bean in respect of harvesting time, the results revealed that pod harvested at 10-12 days after flowering (DAF) and the varieties BARI Jharsheem-1, BARI Jharsheem-2 perform better as quality of vegetable.
