Evaluation of Short Duration T. Aman Rice Varieties Under Different Establishment Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cultivation of T. Aman rice is delayed very often due to late recession of flood water and transplanting of Boro rice is also delayed because of delayed harvesting of previous crop. Delay in transplanting gradually decreases rice yield depending on the degree of late transplanting. More than 3 million ha of rice is affected by drought during both the dry and wet seasons. Farmers sometimes transplanting of photosensitive variety in T. Aman season and also transplanting of short duration variety to avoid this situation. In this study, different short duration T.Aman varieties and establishment methods were evaluated. The grain yield of BRRI dhan49 was the highest (4.30 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan39 and the lowest was in BRRI dhan57 irrespective of establishment methods. The grain yield in transplanting was the highest (4.59 t/ha) followed by dry-seeding with pre-germinated seed and the lowest was in dry seeded rice irrespective of varieties.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of short duration T. Aman rice varieties under different establishment methods

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during T. Aman 2012 season at BRRI farm, Gazipur. In this experiment three short duration T. Aman varieties and three establishment methods were applied. The design of the experiment was RCB with three replications. In T. Aman season, treatments were: Factor A: Short duration T. Aman varieties: V₁-BRRI dhan39; V₂-BRRI dhan49 and V₃-BRRI dhan 57 and Factor B: Establishment methods: EM₁-Dry seeding, EM₂-Dry seeding with pre-germinated seeds and EM₃-Transplanting methods were applied. Fertilizer (kg/ha): (N, P, K, S & Zn) was 59-11-41-11-3, 69-11-41-11-3 and 59-11-41-11-3 for BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan57, respectively. The Basal dose (kg/ha): (P, K, S & Zn) was 11-41-11-3 for all the varieties. In case of BRRI dhan49 except urea all fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal split. For BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan57 1st split urea was applied during basal dose. Rest of the urea was applied in two equal split.

The grain yield of BRRI dhan49 was the highest followed by BRRI dhan39 and the lowest was in BRRI dhan57 irrespective of establishment methods. The grain yield in transplanting was the highest followed by dry-seeding with pre-germinated seed and the lowest was in dry seeded rice irrespective of varieties. Considering dry seeding with pre-germinated seeds method, BRRI dhan49 showed the highest grain yield followed by BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan57 gave the lowest yield. In transplanting seed, among the three varieties BRRI dhan49 gave the highest grain yield. BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan57 gave statistically similar grain yield. The variety BRRI dhan39 gave the highest yield in transplanting method followed by dry seeded method. The lowest yield was observed in dry seeding with pre-germinated seed. In case of BRRI dhan49, the highest yield was obtained from transplanting method followed by dry seeding with pre-germinated seed. The lowest yield was in dry seeded rice. The highest grain yield for BRRI dhan57 was in transplanted rice. The growth durations of BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan57 rice in dry seeding method were 115, 126 and 97 days, respectively. The highest growth duration was obtained from BRRI dhan49 followed by BRRI dhan37 and the lowest was in BRRI dhan57. In dry seeding with pre-germinated seed and transplanting method, the highest growth durations were observed in BRRI dhan49 followed by BRRI dhan39. The lowest growth durations were in BRRI dhan57 both in dry seeding with pre-germinated seed and transplanting method.
