A Study on the Comparative Performance of Early Sown Olitorius Jute Over Capsularis Jute in Flood Prone Area of Tangail District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at farming system research site, Palima, Tangail on farmers' field during the period from April to July 1986, with six capsularis varieties namely 0-154, CVL-l, CVE-3, Atompat-38, Mutant C-36 and one local variety and two olitorius varieties, Fulguni Tosa (0-9897) and 8 mutant (OM-1). This mutant, (OM-l) was introduced by BJ R I from outside. All these varieties were sow n in the sowing time of capsularis to find out the possibility of growing olitorius variety in sowing time of capsulasris as well as to study root initiation aspect under flooded condition in low lying areas. Different varieties under test have not shown any significant difference in their varietal characters except in plant height and yield. Significantly higher plant height was obtained from Fulguni- Tosa and OM-1 (266 and 258 cm respectively) over other capsularis varieties . Fulguni Tosa, (OM-l) and Atompat-38 produced the highest yield of fibre and stick; Fulguni-Tosa produced the highest fibre yield (2.06 t/ha). The highest net benefit (Tk 4273/ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.66) were obtained from Fulguni-Tosa followed by the Mutant (OM-l). Root initiation started after inundation by flood water, at 4th day in Fulguni- Tosa followed by other varieties whereas in Atompat-38 rest development started 15 days after flood water inundated the land.

Objectives:

To study the yield performance and rooting behavior under submerged condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in farmers' field during April to July, 1986 at farming system research site, palima, Kalihati, Tangail. The site is medium low belonging to the sonatala soil series The trial was conducted in a randomized block design with six replications having unit plot size et 10 x 5 m. The land was fertilized with 45 kg N, 12 kg P₂0₅ and 30 kg K₂0 per hectare in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and murate of potash respectively. The whole quantity of triple super phosphate, murate of potash and half of urea were applied at the time of final land preparation and the rest half of urea was top dressed 42 days after sowing. The seeds were broadcasted in first week of April, 1986. Seed rate was 10 kg/ha. Weeding and thinning were done twice on 12-18th days and on 28-30th days after sowing. Arodin was applied by mixing it with flour and rice husk in ball form against the field cricket 8-10 days after sowing. Harvesting of jute was done between 102-114 days after sowing. Flood records of previous fifteen years for flood prone area of Tangail district and monthly rainfall and temperature data at the experimental site are given in Table 4 and 5 respectively. Observations on the plant population, plant height at harvest and yield from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were compared by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (Steel and Torrie, 1960).
