Farmers' Attitude Towards Plantation of Timber Yielding Plants in Some Selected Area of Gazipur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study aims at determining the farmers' attitude towards plantation of timber) yielding plants and to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their attitude towards the plantation of timber yielding plants. The study also focused on to look at the problems being encountered by the farmers. Data were collected from 60 timber growing farmers from Kapasia upazila of Gazipur district during February 2006 to March 2006. Age, education, family size, family education, farm size, annual income, organizational participation, communication exposure, cosmopolite ness, agricultural knowledge and environmental knowledge, were the independent variables of this study while attitude of the farmers towards the plantation of timber yielding plants was the only dependent variable. Among the farmers, 55% were middle aged, 73.33% had medium (5-8) family, 56.6% had medium organizational participation, 41.67% had medium cosmopoliteness and 40% had secondary level of education. The major problems identified for planting new timber yielding plants in farmers' farm were selling of tree at low price due to deceiveness of the broker, trees are often break down by storm and cyclone, shade of tree is harmful for field crops etc. Among them, selected characteristics farmers education, family education, farm size, annual income, organizational participation, communication exposure, cosmopoliteness, agricultural knowledge and environmental knowledge were found to have significant relationship with their attitude towards plantation of timber yielding plants.

Objectives:

1. To determine farers' attitude towards plantation of timber yielding plants, 2. To determine and describe the fanners' selected characteristics (age, education, family size, farm size, annual income, family education, Cosmo politeness, argil knowledge, communication exposure, organizational participation and environmental knowledge), 3. To explore the relationship between farmers' attitude towards timber plantation and their selected characteristics and 4. To identify the problems being encountered by the farmers towards plantation of timber yielding plants.

Methodology:

The location of the study was Kapasia upazila of Gazipur district. This upazila is situated about 65 km North of Dhaka City Corporation and 35 km North-East of Gazipur town. The upazilla is consisted of eleven unions namely: Kapasia sadar, Chadpur. Durgapur, Targaon, Raeat, Ghagutia, Sonmania, Barishnba, Singhasree, Tok and Korihata. The study was conducted in Kapasia sadar, Durgapur and Chadpur unions. The farmers of these three unions were grouped into three farm categories i.e. small land holding (0.61- 1 ha), medium land holding (1.01-3.00 ha) and large farm holding (above 3 ha) according to DAE. An interview schedule was carefully prepared in order to collect relevant information keeping the objectives of the study in mind. After field survey, data from the whole interview schedule were compiled, tabulated and analyzed according to the objectives of the study. In this process, all the response in the interview schedules were given numerical coded values. Local units were converted into standard units and qualitative data were converted into quantitative ones by means of suitable scoring whch ever necessary.
