Profitability and Resource Use Efficiency of Different Varieties of Aman Paddy in Rainfed Condition: Farm Level Study in Some Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study made an attempt to determine the profitability and resource use efficiency among the three transplanted aman rice varieties: Binasail, Nizersail and Pajam. Data were obtained from 150 farmers of five villages under sadar thana of Mymensingh district. Cobb-Douglas production function was used to measure the effect of various factors on rice production. The factors of production considered were land preparation. weeding, use of seedling. fertilizers. land use cost and seasonal effect. The net return of Pajam was the highest followed by Binasail and Nizersail. Considering the aggregate production for all rice varieties studied. it was found that except the coefficients of cost of weeding and fertilizers. all other variables were statistically significant in explaining the variations of rice production but the result varied in different varieties.

Objectives:

To determine the relative profitability of Binasail. Naizersail and Pajarn Varieties of rice and to compare the productivity and resource use efficiency among those varieties.

Methodology:

Source of Data: The study was conducted in sadar thana of Mymensingh district. Five villages namely. Batra, Suttakhali. Vabakhali, Charkalibart and Charishwardi were selected purposively where farmers grow Binasail. A systematic sampling method was followed in this study. At first 20 farmers were selected for each variety from each of the five villages. Later 10 samples were drawn for each variety from each village and data were collected systematically using a interview schedule. Thus. the total number of sample of participating farmers became 150 having 50 samples for each variety. Data were collected after post harvest of T. aman paddy during the month of March to May. 1993.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings captioned in the text indicate that profitability of Binasail is closer to Pajam and 1.76 times higher than that of Nizersail. Regarding lhe land preparation. the value of MVP for Binasail and Pajarn is more than one which indicates that more care need to be taken in land preparation for these varieties. In terms of seedling use efficiency Binasail required additional seedling followed by Nizersail and Pajam. In respect of fertilizers use efficiency Binasail and Nizersail avidenced better exploitation of soil nutrients which lead to conclude that these two varieties showed low input requirement. But in case of pajam, lhe pict ure is different. It showed need of higher applied fertilizers. Binasail is suitable for late cultivation as well as in normal time. It matures 2-4 weeks earlier than the variety. Nizersail. On lhe other hand. Pajarn and other high yielding varieties of rice are not suitable for late cultivation (BINA. 1987). It was found that 55 per cenl of the sample farmers cultivated Nizersail. The important reasons of cultivating Natzersail and other local varieties are : The harvest of proceeding crops in late season and appearance of natural calamities like early flood, drought etc in transplanting period.
