Intercropping of Maize with Three Varieties of Groundnut at Two Levels of Plant Population

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Hathazeri during December-May 1984-85 and 1985-86 to evaluate the productivity of maize with groundnut. Maize ( var. Sadaf) was grown with three varieties of groundnut (DA-1, DM-1 and DG-2 ) at two levels of plant population (16,6666 and 11.1111 plant/ha ) , Highest equivalent yield of maize (6.76 t/ha) and net income (Taka 24,555/ha) was obtai- ned from a combination of 44,444 maize + 16,6666 groundnut (var. DG-2) population. This combination also gave the highest LER (1,29). The results suggest that maize and groundnut variety DG-2 can be intercropped maintaining 90cm X 25cm spacing for maize and 30cm X 13cm for groundnut,

Objectives:

To evaluate the productivity of maize with groundnut.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Institute, Hathazari, Chittagong during the months of November to May in 1984- 85 and 1985-86. The soil of the experimental site was silty clay having pH value of 6.4. Ten treatments were evaluated of which six were intercrop treatments besides a sole maize and three sole groundnut crops. It was conducted in a randomized block design with three replication. Four levels of plant population and 3 varieties of groundnut (DA-1, DM-1 and DG-2) of different morphological make up were used. Each unit plot size was 5m x3.6m. Sole crop of maize was seeded at 90 cm row distances of 25 cm. The sole crop of groundnut was seeded at 30cm ; row distances for variety DA-1 and DG-2 and 25cm for variety DM-1, so that each plot of ground nut had 12 rows for varieties DA-1 &GG-2 and 14 rows for DM-1. The intercropped plot had 4 rows of maize & 8 rows of groundnut. The maize variety" Sadaf" was used. The experimental area received fertilizers at the rate of 20 kg N, 60 kg P₂0₅ and 40 kg K₂0 per ha at the time of sowing. An additional 100kg N/ha for maize was given by top dressing close to the maize rows, equally at 21 and 42 days after sowing. Irrigation was given as and when necessary. Monoculture for any crop or its cultivar as well as crop mixture were harvested from an area of 4m x 1.8m. The crop duration for maize and DA-1, DM-1 and GG-2 of groundnut varieties were 135, 150 158 and 170 days, respectively. Maize equivalent was computed ,by converting yield of intercrops into the yield of maize on the basis of prevailing market rates of individual crops. Land equivalent ratio (LER) was computed in the method given by Annonvmous (1973). Economic analysis on the basis of net monetary return were done to evaluate the intercropping system.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the experiment suggest that maize (variety Sadaf) and groundnut ( variety DG-2 ) can be intercropped on the same land at a population level of 44,444 maize and 16,6666 groundnut plants / ha maintaining 90 cm X 25 cm spacing for maize and 80 cm X 13 cm for groundnut and applying fertilizers at the rate of 120-60-40 N P₂0₅ K₂O kg/ha.
