Controlling Mortality of Litchi Layers Through Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was conducted at the Gerrnplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvetnent Project (FTIP), Department of Hoorticulture, Bangladesh Agricu ltural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 2005 to June 2006 to study the effect of age of air layers and nursery media conditions on the mortal ity, growth and development of litchi layers (cv. China-3). The study consisted of two factors namely (a) age of litchi layers (i) one year old litchi Iayers and (ii) two months old litchi layers; (b) nursery media conditions viz., (i) layers in earthen pot underground; (ii) layers in earthenpot above ground (iii) layers in polybag under ground; (iv) layers in poly bag abov e ground and (v) layers without polybag under ground conditions. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design. From the results it was observed that, almost all parameters were influenced by age of litchi layers and nursery media conditions. Minimum mortality rate (14.51 %) was obtained from one year old litchi layers and maximum mortality rate (34.94%) was obtained from two months old litchi layers. Layers without polybag underground condition showed minimurn mortality rate (11.41%) and layers in polybag above ground condition showed maximum mortality rate (59.37%). Combinedly one year old litchi layers grown without polybag underground condition showed minimut mortality rate (6.25%) and the two months old litchi layers in polybag aboveground condition showed maxirnum mortality rate (87.50%).

Objectives:

1. To find out the effect of age of air layers on mortality of litchi layer in the nursery bed; 2. To observe the growth and development of litchi layer in different growing media in the nursery bed; and 3. To control the mortality of litchi layer by practicing different management practices.

Methodology:

The present experiment was conducted at the Germ plasm Center (GPC) of Fruit Tree !Inprovement Project (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 2005 to June 2006. The topography of land was medium high. The soil of experimental area was silty-loam in texture belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain. The soil was fertile, well drained and slightly acidic with pH varying from 5.5 to 6.8. Soil color was dark grey due to rich in organic matter content. The experiment was designed to control the mortality of litchi layers through managernent practices. The experiment consisted of two factors viz. age of litchi layers and nursery media conditions. Factor A: Age of litchi layers - i) P₁= One year old litchi layers (Old litchi Iayers) and ii) P₂ = Two months old litchi layers (New litchi layers). One year old litchi layers were used in the experiment. The layers were kept in the polybags for one year in normal condition to the survivability. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Now a days nursery practice in almost all nurseries else where in the country is done through out the year. So, it is very essential to compare between the Iayers. Factor B: Nursery media conditions - T₁= Layers in earthen pot under ground, T₂= Layers in earthen pot above ground, T₃ = Layers in polybag under ground, T₄= Layers in polybag above ground, T₅ =Layers without polybag under ground. The recorded data on different parameters of the study collected from the experiment were subjected to statistical procedure for analysis of variance. Significance of difference of means was done by Least Significant Difference (LSD) following the procedure as described by Gomez and Gome. MSTAT-C computer software programme was used for statistical analysis.
