Effect of Intercropping Maize with Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An intercropping experiment involving maize and rice was conducted at BARI. Joydebpur to determine effect of maize as base crop on the productivity and returns from maize-rice intercropping compared with maize and rice grown as monocultures. Monoculture maize (Var. Sadaf ) consisted of 44,444 plants and monoculture rice (Var. Chandina ) consisted of 333,333 plants per hectare. Three populations of maize (100 %, 50 % and 33 % ) were used in intercropping systems with 50% of rice population. High maize population ( 100% ) intercropped with rice recorded enhanced grain yield and net return over mono culture and other intercropping treatments. Higher net returns (Taka 2067 and Taka 1331/ha) were obtained from intercropped treatments with 100% and 50% maize population with LER values of 1.35 and 1.23 respectively. Maximum total energy (1.46 X 107 Cal ha^-1) and protein yield (351 kg/ha ) were obtained from intercropped maize with 100% plant population.

Objectives:

To make the maize crop popular among the growers

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Kharif season (April-July) 1979 at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka. The soil of the experimental field was clay loam having pH around 5.6. Maize was considered as base crop with a population of 44, 441 per hectare. Three inter- crops with maize-rice combinations were grown keeping 90 cm spacing between rows and 25 cm, 50 cm and 75 cm between plants wherein the populations for maize were 44444, 22222 and 14815 plants per hectare respectively. Three rows of rice (variety Chandina) were seeded with the spacing of 30 cm between the rows of maize. Rice seeds were sown at the rate of 100 kg per hectare for the mono culture and 50 kg ha ^{- 1}for intercrop where the populations were at 333, 333 and 166,666 respectively. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 6m. In maize and rice combinations nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were applied at the rate of 110 kg N, 70 P₂0₅ and 40 kg K₂0 per hectare in the form of urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash respectively. Full doze of phosphate, potash and 55 kg N/ha were applied at the time of land preparation and the remaining 55 kg N were applied at 42 days after seeding. Monoculrure and intercrops were harvested from an area of 4 m X 1.8 m leaving border rows in all directions. To find the advantage of yield in intercropping LER method was used (IRRI, 1973).
