Performance of Late Transplanted Aman Rice in Flood Prone Area of Tangail District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in farmer's field at the farming system research site , Pahrna , Tangail during the period from September to December. 1989. with five local varieties, namely. Muahi. Khika, Chapali, Aloye and Indrasail and three improved varieties. namely Binasail. Kiron (BR-22) and Dishari (BR-23). After the flood water had receded from the low lying flood prone areas. the crop was transplanted to determine the response of the varieties to late planting. The varieties showed significant differences in their yields and yield contribution characters except straw yield. Significantly taller plants were obtained in Chapali and Aloye over the other varieties. The varieties Binasatl. Chapalt and Kiron were considered as fine rice because their IOOO-grain wetght were as below as 20_g_. The highest yield was obtained from Kiron followed by Binasail and the lowest from Khika. The variety Kiron gave the highest net benefit followed by Binasail.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performances of five local and three unproved rice varieties for late transplant in aman season

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in farmer's field during September to December, 1989 at farming system research site at Palima, Kalihati, Tangail. The site is medium low belonging to the Sonatola soil series. Five local and three improved varieties of transplanted aman rice namely Mughi, Khika, Chapah, Aloye, Indrasail. Binasail. Kiron and Dishari were grown in a randomized block design in farmer's field having unit plot size of 10111 x 5m. The land was fertilized with 60 kg N, 60 kg P₂0₅ and 40 kg K₂0 per hectare in t he form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. The whole quantity of triple super phosphate and muriate of potash and half of urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest half of urea was top dressed in two equal installments at 25 and 40 clays after transplanting. The seeds were sown on seed bed on 5th August so that seedlings become ready to transplant on 16th September at the age of 40 clays. But seedlings of all the varieties were transplanted on 20th September, 1989 clue to delay in land preparation. The spacing were 20cm and 15cm between lines and hills, respectively. No other intercultural operations were required except spraying of insecticide against stem borer and rice blug Data on different yield components were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot and those on grain and straw yields were recorded from the whole plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically considering each farmer's field as one replication. The mean of different . agronomic trails and the benefit cost ratio were compared by Duncan's New Multiple Ranae Test (Steet and Torrie. 1960).

Achievement/Findings:

From the above results it can be concluded that most of the varieties used in the experiment can be transplanted late and a ,good yield can he obtained from these varieties.
