Seasonal Influence on the Infestation of Legume Pod Borer and Aphid Infesting Yard Long Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The seasonal influence on the infestation of legume pod borers and aphid in inflorescence and pod of yard long bean grown during the year 2009 at the experimental farm of BSMRAU, Gazipur. In kharif 1season (15 March - 30 June), pod borer infestation started in March and continued up to November. The infestation of pod borer was gradually inclining to the first peak in June following which it started drastically declining in the same month, the declining trend continued till November. The second generation of the pest did not establish in the yard long bean grown in kharif 2 season (1^stJuly -15 October). Aphid infestation started in March and continued to the end of November having distinct 2 peaks; first in July and second peak in October. The pod borer complex comprised two species viz., Euchrysops cnejus and Maruca vitrata, the former had the highest abundance in kharif 1 (93.77%) and kharif 2 (84.58%) season while the later had the highest abundance (77.26%) in rabi season (16 October -15 March) in 2009. Temperature and rainfall had significant influence on the population buildup of pod borers and aphid on yard long bean.

Objectives:

1.To know the seasonal infestation pattern of pod borers (Euchrysops cnejus and Maruca vitrata) and aphids on yard long bean

2.To determine the influence of temperature and rainfall on the seasonal distribution of pod borers and aphids.

Methodology:

The present investigation was undertaken to determine the seasonal distribution of legume pod borers and aphid at the experimental field of BSMRAU, Gazipur during kharif and rabi seasons of the year 2009. The yard long bean, Vigna unguiculata spp. Sesquipedalis (variety toki) was used in this study. Observations were made at weekly intervals starting from March to November to record the rate of infestations by legume pod borers and aphid under field conditions. These observations were made to assess the pest occurrence and population fluctuations during the cropping seasons. To determine the seasonal distribution of legume pod borers and aphid, 6 plants were randomly selected from each experimental plot of 3m× 2m size and were replicated thrice. To assess the incidence of pod borer complex infested inflorescence and pods were collected from the field during harvest and reared in laboratory to have adults. The emerged adults were separated according to species. Finally number of adults was converted into percent emergence based on number of collected infested inflorescence and pods. Weather parameters such as mean minimum and maximum temperature and total rainfall were recorded from the adjoining meteorological station of BSMRAU. Data were analyzed by using MSTAT-C software in a computer.

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings of the present study it can be concluded that Euchrysops cnejus dominates the two third period of crop growing season (kharif 1 & kharif 2) while M. vitrata dominates in the rabi season (16 October -15 March). As a whole, the prevalence of Euchrysops cnejus was more than two folds to M. vitrata in yard long bean.
