Using Patterns of Micro Credit: Evidence from Jobra of Chittagong

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt has been made to know about the using patterns of microcredit of women and its impact on their socio-economic improvement. The target population was those women who had availed microcredit facilities from some microcredit providing institutions or organizations in the village of Jobra, Hathazari, Chittagong. Survey method was used as a technique of data collection. The majority of population was illiterate or semi-literate. So interview schedule was used as a tool of data collection. Frequency analysis and chi-square statistic were used for data analysis. The results showed that most of the females used their credit in productive sectors and finally got socioeconomic empowerment through acquiring the self esteem, business skills, agricultural productivity, confidence level, decision making power, etc. The findings showed that microcredit has significant impact on the upliftment of socio-economic empowerment of the borrowers at Jobra.

Objectives:

(i) To analyze the scope of microcredit uses by women; and

(ii) To explore the impact of using microcredit.

Methodology:

The study is based on the data of the female population who have used microfinance services during five years from 2005-2010 and they belong to Jobra village, Hathazari. The sample size was 100. The data have been collected face to face interview through semi-structured questionnaire. The interviews were administered personally as most of the respondents were illiterate and don’t know how to read or write. The frequency analysis was used to explore the women’s using pattern of microcredit and role of it behind of changes of women positions at the society.

After data analysis the researcher has concluded that most of the females who availed the facility of microcredit finally use at productive sectors such as micro business, buy and sell cottage items, enriched self – esteem, improvement of women’s consumption patterns and domestication of animals and got socio-economic empowerment. A dramatic change has been brought about due to the microcredit at Jobra village. Microcredit provides opportunity to female keeping involved in economic and trade activities by self business, which enhances women empowerment at a visible extent, pronouncing a positive impact on education, share in total assets and respectable jobs, leading to the higher living standard, rich nutrition and economic prosperity and development. So at the end it may be concluded that microcredit is positively linked with the up lift of socio-economic improvement of working women at Jobra village district Chittagong in Bangladesh.
