Potential Allelopathic Effect of Some Rice Cultivars on Echinochloa Crusgalli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in agronomy lab, BRRI during Aman 2010 to investigate the effects of rice cultivars on the reduction of shoot length, root length and dry matter of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli). Nine rice cultivars were used for this study. Significant reduction of root length of weeds was observed due to allelopathic effect of rice varieties. Significantly highest root length reduction of Echinichloa crusgalli was observed due to root exudates of Rajashail (78.63%) which is statistically similar with Buri Katari(2) (72.40%), Bolorum (71.80%), Chakulia (71.07%), Shada Dumra (69.30%) and Kola Dama (75.13%). On the other hand lowest root length reduction was found in Panbira DA-12 (49.80%). The highest shoot length reduction of Echinochloa crusgalli was found due to the root exudates of Panbira DA-12 (72.60a %) which is statistically similar with Buri Katari(2) (69.93%), Bolorum (71.37%), Chakulia (70.37%), Shada Dumra (68.33%), and Kola Dama (70.37%). However lowest shoot length reduction was found in case of Panbira DA-12(55.23%). Highest dry matter reduction was observed in Rajashail (70.83%) which is statistically similar with Loroi (59.90%), Buri Katari(2) (67.23%), Bolorum (69.77%), Chakulia (68.23%), Shada Dumra (68.73%) and Kola Dama (70.40%) and the lowest dry matter reduction was found in GSR seed which is 53.90%.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of rice cultivars on the reduction of shoot length, root length and dry matter of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli).

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in agronomy lab, BRRI during Aman 2010 to investigate the effects of rice cultivars on the reduction of shoot length, root length and dry matter of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli). Nine rice cultivars were used for this study. The nutrient solution of Urea, TSP and MP were prepared poured in petridishes. Iron meshes were placed into each petridishes by a sterile forceps. Rice seed were sterilized with 2% mercuric chloride and then washed several times with sterile water. The pregerminated rice seed were placed on iron mesh and allowed for root growth. The weed seeds were placed in petridishes. Then the root exudates of rice cultivars were applied on weed Petri dishes everyday and allowed for 14 days of weed seedling growth. Then the weed seedlings were removed gently. Their root length, shoot length and dry matter (oven dried at 80⁰C for three days) was measured. The percentage of reduction of root and shoot length were determined by using the formula- Percent reduction = 100(LC – LT)/LC Where, LC is the length of the weed root or shoot of the control treatment and LT is the length of root or shoot of the treatment

Achievement/Findings:

Among the tested varieties/line Buri Katari(2), Bolorum, Chakulia, Shada Dumra and Kola Dama have allelopathic potentialities and more inhibitory character to suppress weeds in laboratory condition.
