Effect of Different Doses of Herbicide in Controlling Weeds in Potato Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season of 2013-14 to find out the optimum rate of herbicide and time of application against weeds in potato field. Herbicide Arozon were evaluated through post planting pre-emergence (7 days after planting) spraying with different rates on weed management in potato field The treatments were T₁: Arozon @ 0.5 l ha^-1, T₂: Arozon @ 1.0 l ha^-1, T₃: Arozon @ 1.5 l ha^-1, T₄: Arozon @ 2.0 l ha^-1, T₅: Hand weeding at 25 & 45 DAP and T₆: Control (No weeding). Spraying of Arozon @ 1.0 to 2.0 litre ha^-1 controlled all Bathua (chenopodium album) weed. Among the different rates of herbicide, 1.0 to 3.0 litre ha^-1 showed similar results in controlling other board leaf weeds particularly of Amaranthus viridis (Shaknotey), Alternanthera philoxeroides (Maloncho), Lindernia anagallis (Panighas), Ganplalium affine (Bonocopy), Oxalis europea (Amrul) and Glinus lotoides (Carpet ghas). Yield of potato tubers were significantly increased up to 56% over control by spraying Arozon @ 1.0 litre/ ha.

Objectives:

The present experiment was undertaken to find out the optimum rate of herbicides against weeds in potato field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season of 2013-14 to find out the optimum rate of herbicide Arozon 25 EC and time of application against weeds in potato field. BARI during rabi season of 2013-14. Herbicide Arozon 25 EC was evaluated through post planting post-emergence (7 days after planting) spraying with different rates on weed management in potato field. The treatments were T₁: Arozon @ 0.5 l ha^-1, T₂: Arozon @ 1.0 l ha^-1, T₃: Arozon @ 1.5 l ha^-1, T₄: Arozon @ 2.0 l ha^-1, T₅: Hand weeding at 25 & 45 DAP and T₆: Control (No weeding). The unit plots size was 3m x 4m. The potato variety diamant was used as the test crop. The crop was planted on November 28, 2013 and with the spacing of 60 cm x 25 cm. The crop was fertilized with 150-43-140-22 kg N-P-K and S per hectare. Tubers were harvested on February 28, 2014. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with three replications. Data on weed population and their biomass were taken at 25 and 45 days after planting (DAP). Data were analyzed statistically and mean separation was done by LSD following Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Achievement/Findings:

From the above findings it my be concluded that spraying of Arozon 25 EC @ 1.0 litre per hectare at 7 days after planting of potato were most effective in controlling Chenopodium album (Bathua) as well as all broad leaf weeds like Amaranthus viridis, Lindernia anagallis, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Gnaphalium affine, Oxalis europea and Gliuns lotoides.
