Effect of New Generation Herbicide Kelion 50wg (orthosulfamuron) for Weed Containment in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Orthosulfamuron (Kelion 50WG) a pre to post emergence herbicide, was evaluated at BRRI farm, Bhanga during Boro, 2007 to observe its weed control efficiency, impact on plant growth and yield of rice. Bio efficacy data of Kelion 50WG @ 150g ha^-1 spraying at 5 and 15 DAT against weed suppression indicated that at BRRI farm Bhangamore than 80% control of Cyperus difformis, Enhydra fluctuans, Monochoria vaginalis, Scirpus juncoides, Leptochloa chinensis and only 37% control of Cynodon dactylon were achievedWeed free plot gave the highest grain yield (7.39 t/ha) which was statistically the same with other treatments except for Kelion 50WG@ 100g ha^-1 spraying at 5 DAT and Kelion 50WG@ 200g ha^-1 spraying at 5 DAT treated plot. The lowest grain yield was obtained from un-weeded plot (4.92 t ha^-1). Phytotonicity symptoms were not more prominent for using this herbicide.

Objectives:

To observe its weed control efficiency, impact on plant growth and yield of rice as affected by Orthosulfamuron (Kelion 50WG) herbicide

Methodology:

The treatments were, i) Kelion 50WG @ 100g ha^-1 spraying at 5 DAT, ii) Kelion 50WG@ 150g ha^-1 spraying at 5 DAT, iii) Kelion 50WG@ 200g ha^-1 spraying at 5 DAT, iv) Kelion 50WG@ 100g ha^-1 spraying at 15 DAT, v) Kelion 50WG@ 150g ha^-1 spraying at 15 DAT, vi) Kelion 50WG@ 200g ha^-1 spraying at 15 DAT, vii) Sunrise 150WG (ethoxysulfuran) @ 100g ha^-1 spraying at 15 DAT, viii) Superheat 500EC ( Pretilachlor) @ 1000ml ha^-1@ spraying at 5 DAT, ix) Weed Free by hand weeding and x) Control (Unweeded). Superheat 500 EC @1000 ml ha^-1 and Sunrise 150WG @ 100g ha^-1 was used to compare with Orthosulfamuron (Kelion 50WG). The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with 3 replications. Forty days old seedlings of BRRI Dhan28 were transplanted on 15^th January, 2007 at 20x20 cm spacing with 2 seedlings hill^-1. Fertilizer was applied following BRRI recommended dose. Superheat 500EC were sprayed at 5 days after transplanting, Sunrise 150WG were sprayed at 15 DAT and Kelion 50WG were sprayed at 5 and 15 DAT as pre and post emergence action. In weed free treatment, the plots were kept weed free up to 50 DAT. Weed control efficiency was calculated using weed dry matter weight data. Other operations were done as and when necessary. Phytotoxicity of the herbicide to rice plants was determined by visual observations (Yellowing leaves, burring leaf tips, stunting growth etc). The degree of toxicity on rice plant was measured by the following scale used by IRRI (1965)

Achievement/Findings:

Orthosulfamuron (Kelion 50WG) @ 150g ha^-1spraying both at 5 and 15 DAT controlled many weeds effectively and produced optimum grain yield.No plant injury was observed during the crop growing period due to the application of Kelion 50WG @ 150g ha^-1. The herbicide could be applicable as both pre emergence to early post emergence action.
